Do you pass on dessert when you eat out? Wed, 11/10/04 1:02 PM (permalink)
If you usually pass on dessert when you eat out, what does it take to change your mind? A display case? A dessert try brought to your table, even if you didn't ask for it? When asked "would you like to see the dessert tray?", most folks like me pass. When wonderful fresh dessert is displayed tableside I get weak.

I pass on desserts most of the time. Usually, I am too full for dessert after I eat and also I think that desserts are overpriced in most places. I don't want to pay 4.50-6.00 for one piece of pie or cake or whatever. On special occasions, at special places, we will splurge on a dessert but not very often. I would rather wait and go get ice cream later in the evening.

I agree that dessert is often overpriced, especially if it is a brought in, previously frozen item thawed 3 days ago. Would they sell more if they priced it to move, or are most of us so full that we wouldn't take it for free?

Like emsmom, I'm too full and I don't think most desserts at retaurants are worth the price.I can go to Costco or BJ's and get the whole cake or pie for the same price. But I should say that if I'm at a diner known for it HOMEMADE dessert I will eat a light meal so I can have desset.

We hardly ever do dessert because we are too full. It has to be something extremely over the top otherwise.

Yeah, I'd rather have a shot of espresso.

About 5-6 years ago when we went on a day trip to Grand Casino
in Biloxi, our lunch was one of those "super-buffets" where
you had Cajun, Chinese, Southern, Italian, a salad bar, roast
beef, and extras to choose from in addition to dessert.
By the time I threw up the white flag after 2 1/2 plates, I
decided to skip dessert, and from that time on, I usually have
passed, but have not abandoned entirely. Don't have the
sweet tooth like I had when younger. [|)]

We rarely have desserts out--except for Janies addiciton to really good Mexican Flan! We will often have a little something later at home---or if on the road in our hotel.

Pass on dessert? What is that? Some kind of cult?

I eat dessert out only when it is something extra special (Commander's Palace bread pudding for example) that the restaurant is famous for.

I do admit if there is a cheese tray on the menu, I make sure and order small enough beforehand so that I can order the cheese tray and a nice glass of port

Due to the Atkins thing, sugar is not on my program. With very few exceptions, I have passed everytime for the last 15 months.

I'd usually rather have a Sambuca ... (in a rocks glass, not on the rocks -- I've never gotten into the snifter thing.)

If I'm with a willing companion, I'll usually be satisfied with a taste of their dessert. Most dessert is too over the top.

I often meet up with the same group of people as we travel with the races. It is kind of a tradition with us to order one of every dessert and pass it around.

Exception for me: I will take a really good creme brulle for myself or if they have a spectacular dessert such as pudding at the Germantown Commissary in Memphis.

Whoops! I used to eat pumpkin pie as a Thanksgiving and Christmas desert.

I pass on anything that's fru fru or fluffy. If it looks like they'll cut me a decent sized piece of cheese cake I can't pass that up. Or if they have one of those frozen deserts with four kinds of chocolate and three kinds of carmel, yeah I'll have that. If it's a nice place I'll usually have desert with a glass of red wine or some cognac.

I almost never order dessert in a restaurant. However, the lady that owns Becky's, a diner where I have lunch 2-3 times a week near my office, will often just bring a slice of her homemade layer cake and set it on the table when she notices that I and a buddy of mine are there. Nice!

I dont order dessert usually. I think most of the time it is factory made and overpriced. However, at JR's in Rockwood I will MAKE room for dessert. The pineapple upside down cake will make you "slap yo mama"

We rarely order dessert, but if it is a place known for a certain dessert, we will usually order one with spoons/forks for everyone and share.

I liked the idea of the "dessert spoons", where the dessert is served attractively on a spoon. A spoonful is just enough, and you could try two!

The Buffet at the Moonlite includes the dessert section. Why choose between Blackberry Cobbler, Fudgepecan and Regular pecan Pie, Rhubarb Pie and Banana Pudding when it's all there for you! In the interest of 'cutting back to make room for dessert" I no longer consider the broccoli and cheese or the mashed potato, stuffing and gravy from the dinner buffet. I have found that Pork Ribs and Blackberry Cobbler are perfect mates.

When eating out, always. When eating IN, at times. I have a hankerin' for certain brands of ice cream & pies. Never eat dessert directly after eatin'; much better as a snack later (ha!) 'fore I retire for the night.

I mostly do pass, especially at Oriental restaurants which is where we usually go out. However if we are at a homey type of place which is likely to have good pie or the like, or the place is particularly known for a dessert item, or if we are having a big meal out, then I say go for it! Sometimes we share under those circumstances, sometimes not

It is hard for me to resist--especially if a dessert tray is passed in front of me. I rarely do the buffet thing. I tried to go to the Moonlite last month while visiting relatives and they were closed. I would have joined the Mayor in trying every last one of those cobblers. Oh well, one of these days!!!

I'm a sucker for chocolate mousse. If it's available, I'll always order it. Rarely anything else.

The only time I pass on dessert is when we eat at our local steakhouse and I'm so full I can't even think about it..

We usually share a dessert, but it has to be something very special that we would never make at home, or that is special to the restaurant or region. And, I always have some kind of coffee after dinner (sometimes to my regret when the day old dregs arrive).

                                                        cheers, John

I usually get dessert and an after dinner drink when we go out. In the winter I enjoy splitting a cheese plate and a glass of port. A sweet dessert has to be made in house and worth it. Unfortunately, too many of them are!

Do I pass on dessert? It depends on two things: do I have any room left and how full do I want to be? Often times we will share desserts ordering, maybe, one dessert per two to three diners. It also depends on what is avialable. I find too many desserts look better than they taste. If that is suspected, I pass. NWTC (not worth the calories)
