Do you use canned meat?

So what do you think about canned meat (Potted Meat, Vienna Sausages, Canned Chicken, Spam)?  Is it or ?  I have been a Spam user since I was a kid, my parents would add it to Ramen Noodles.  Plus an egg if it was breakfast.  I have never used any of the other canned meat products.  What do you think about canned meat?  Have you found any good or bad Store Brand versions?

Spam, Treet, Vienna sausage all make it into my cupboard. So, too, ever once in a while, does canned corned beef.

    Oh, Underwood deviled ham.

You have it in New York, and it's not a leaner version of Spam. It is a product that competes with Spam. It is made by Armour Star while Spam is a Hormel product.

By the way, the Vienna sausage I prefer is the Armour brand.

I like Spam and my experience has been that grilling it for a short time directly over the coals or burners gives a less salty result than if it's grilled indirect or smoked.

I haven't had Vienna sausages in years but as a teenager I liked them as an occasional snack.

Ah, there's nothing like a can of Viennies and some sardines when you're out on a lake fishing. Especially when you find that the wedge of blueberry pie you left in your tackle box over the winter isn't still good.

I hate to admit it, but I do like the new SPAM singles (in the pouches, not the can), and I like Bryan Vienna Sausages.  A friend of mine swears by canned corned beef, but I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet.

I do, I use it to remember and it feels good.
These canned meats have helped families survive through tough times, and they are really good.
A mother would open up a little can of vienna sausages, or a can of corned beef, mix them up with rice, vegetables, tomatoe sauce and feed the family of six.  The meat just added the taste to a basically meatless meal.  And I could argue that it may have been healthier too, as canned as it is.  I make a great corned beef  dinner too, with a side of rice, delicious, olives, sofrito, yum yum and comforting.

I cannot bring myself to buy those Spam singles. I remember when they first . I priced them and realized that they were amazingly expensive when compared to the cost of a regular can of Spam.

No, we don't. When I was a kid,my dad wouldn't allow Spam in the house. He said he had that junk in WWII, and that was too much. We've continued the no-spam tradition. I believe spam stands for "spiced ham" and is nothing more than a chunk of that cold cut made to fit in the can....Ironically, I do like thinly sliced spiced ham as a cold cut...and also fried like bologna and put in a sandwich.

I love SPAM! I don't eat it as much as I like to due to the sodium content. (HBP) I like to mix it with mayo, onions, celery and a little horse radish. It makes a great spread for crackers or dark seeded rye bread.
I remember eating Underwood Deviled Ham as a kid and still like it today. Canned corned beef is one of my guilty pleasures that I rarely admit.

Once you have made Fried Rice with Spam chopped into small squares sauteed until brown and added to the rice. You will always do it that way. Guests will always remark how great it is. Never tell them its Spam. You can also grill up some pineapple and dry it out a little and dice it and add as well...Russ

I make a tarragon chicken salad that the original deli recipe called for canned chicken. The texture of cooked or boiled and pulled chicken can't replicate the taste and texture of the salad. Branding doesn't seem to make much difference. Canned tuna of course for tuna salad and yes, Underwood deviled ham for special circumstances that I'd rather not reveal and betray a trade secret.

That sounds good. When we lived in the Virgin Islands a friend was the importer of Spam, among other things, including several beer brands, and he used to serve Spam at parties. What he'd do was cut Spam into cubes and saute the cubes in Cruzan (dark) rum. Then he'd serve them on toothpicks as hors d'oeurve. They were terrific.

My sweety makes some great canned corned beef tacos! She uses corn tortillas, Pace, and LnTs.

Mary's Kitchen makes some great Corned Beef Hash and Roast Beef Hash. I can add some eggs to that CBH and it's a treasured treat. Tha roast beef I just eat heated outa tha can.

Little Debbie (NO! Prairie Belt by Castleberry... musta had a senior moment. Little Debbies are those crunchy things) )makes some good canned vienna type sausages. Way spiced up from tha reg vienna.

What about stuff from a jar? Kinda canned I guess? Like chipped beef.

No problem at all Mr. H...just an observation...one man's poison is another, etc...As I said, I eat spiced ham...just don't like it canned and in large hunks....but they sell tons of the stuff...hell they sell tons of Pizza Hut stuff too...no concrete definitions for "food", right?

PapaJoe8:  Little Debbie?  Surely you jest!  The private owners of Little Debbie (McKee Foods) are dedicated Seventh-Day Adventist vegetarians.  The only animal-based ingredients they use are milk and honey.

Living alone, I use Hormel 5 oz. canned chunk ham regularly (and love its flavor and texture) along with several brands of 5 oz. canned chicken breast or thigh and drum meat and solid (not chunk, which is like a puree) albacore tuna.  I find these are the perfect size for cooking for one with no leftovers.

I love Underwood deviled ham; you can mix it with your yolks and a little mayo when you make deviled eggs. Add some sweet relish, too (drained). Also I love Vienna sausage. I don't like the canned chicken much since my mother served it all the time at home, just mixed with some plain Minute Rice (bleah!) but I do like the prepared chicken breast strips in the meat counter for a quick Alfredo sauce ingredient. And I don't think I could survive without canned tuna.

I almost forgot about potted Meat Food until it was mentioned here. There used to be several brands when I was a kid and a very popular lunch with a couple of pieces of bread and a plastic knife when I was in grade school. That plastic knife would probably get a kid suspended on a weapons charge nowadays. If cheap hot dogs contain pig's L&A, I hate to imagine what this stuff was made of.
