Does Size Matter?

In an earlier thread they were talking about Large Hot Dogs. The Giant at Slots Of Fun in Vegas and Hot Dog King adding a 1/2 lb monster. Personally I cant stand a large hot dog. I am never able to cook it correctly nor do they ever taste right. Putting the right amount of chili, mustard, relish or kraut is impossible. 8 to 1 I think is the best size for bun to condiment ratio. I cant even eat the ones served at Sams and I think those are a Bests 4 to 1. What do you think and for you Hot Dog stand vendors do you sell more of the smaller ones or the big ones?...Russ

The local Sam's is now using Nathan's 4/1, yep, they are too large for me as well.

I know this will have the hot dog gods hurling lighting bolts my way but these have become my favorite dog (Just dug the empty package out of the trash). Our local supermarket has recently begun carrying them so I gave them a try. An all beef, 6/1 dog, I like them. The follow up pics are from a recent post here on RF. Before y’all grab your quiver please give them a try.


Breakfast at 5:00am yesterday was an all beef dog fried in butter, the bun toasted in the pan, some of my homemade red onion & sour pickle relish, and spicy mustard. A small bag of chips and a coke, a great way to start the day.

I can't stand those large dogs, either!!
During our Vegas trips, my sis always has me take her to Slots of Fun for her customary 1/2 pound 99 cent dog...
they are too big and too porky for my personal tastes.

I am not crazy about a super large dog either.I like a anywhere between
a 8/1 and a 10/1.It has to be a grilled, spicy,snappy type dog like a Sabrett,Nathans,Hebrew National etc.I had a Hatfield Deli style dog,much to my protesting before I ate it,but it was actually good.It's funny I don't like a big hot dog,but I loved grilled sausage and peppers hot or sweet,and grilled quality kielbasi.

I'm not a sausage eater, but I could see how those sausage and pepper sandwiches can be appealing! (the kind they serve on the Jersey shore boardwalks, like Seaside Heights... and those they have at county and state fairs, etc)(my sis loves her sausage sandwich from the Midway in Seaside Heights.

I also like anything between 8/1 to 10/1. I don't want a monster in my hands, just something easy to handle and not risk pulling a jaw muscle trying to open my mouth to eat. If I'm hungry, I'll get 2 or 3, if not more of them. My old A&W that be long gone now used 12/1's, and I'd drive away from there with a half dozen smothered in chili, with pickles, onions and mustard. Made for a great lunch!

I call it Bear's Hot Dog Law of Diminishing Return.

Whereas, for the most part, any larger than a 1/4 lb., and a frankfurter loses its Hot Dogginess value/taste/appeal in direct proportion to its increasing size.

Though there are exceptions, the prime size in order for a for a hot dog to offer full flavor and satisfaction, is between a 10-to-a-lb and a 4-to-a-lb.

I like my bologna sliced thin on white bread and not in the form of a hot dog on a bun.

I like my baloney sliced thick, in a buttermilk biscuit.
