Does anyone shop at WinCo Foods? Thu, 10/3/13 11:22 AM (permalink)
Does anyone shop at WinCo?

Yesterday I went "the back way" to Sam's Club here in McKinney and noticed a huge store under construction.

Seems that there is a WinCo Foods coming to McKinney.

This grocery(?) store is "Super" Wegman's-sized.  The only grocery I've seen that size in Texas is Central Market's "main store" in Houston.

So, what's WinCo's "deal"?  Price?  Selection?  Prepared foods?

Hey Jim, my wife shops there. The only reason we shop there is for price. The other food stores are much higher is their prices. No frills, no big specials, just lower prices.............Thats good enough for me, I don't need anything but good prices...............pnwc

      Thanks, pnwchef!

It kinda sounds like an humongous Aldi that sells brand names!  Grocery and restaurant prices down here are low anyway - at least compared to NoVa's as they were when I visited May-June of this year.

The store they're building here is 90,000+ sq. ft. on 13 acres; that's why I was thinking a super-Wegman's-type enterprise.  But, hey ... lower prices work for me!

WinCo must be pretty confident; there is both a Sam's Club and a super huge Wal-Mart (that was built as a prototype for being "21st. Century, eco-friendly") pretty much right across the street, and a new Super Target less than 1/2 mile away.

WinCo is employee owned. Huge produce and meat departments, but as PNW says no frills. Far beyond an Aldi. Large variety of brands and products and I can find things there that I find no where else for this part of the country. I believe they are called Cub Foods in the upper Midwest.
Best Hispanic ingredient selection here for our sizeable Latino population. You'll love it.

Winco does not accept credit cards.

Cub Foods? They had three or four stores in Columbus about 20 years ago, but they were all closed within about two years.

                  Too bad for you.

Not at all. Customers were required to bag their own stuff. I went once.

We still are. Interesting. I'll gladly pay less and get more for the
trouble of throwing my stuff in a bag. The cashiers also  run 2 lines at once and they are fast.
Must add, the biggest and best bulk section I've encountered.

Cool.  There are a bunch of 'little things' - like Heinz Hamburger Relish - I can't find here in Dallas.

I was wondering a bit about their location, but I see now that they are a "destination".

And, we do have a Latino or two here in McKinney.

Jim, I'll check on the hamburger relish tomorrow. I'm pretty sure they do stock Heinz stuff, also it is where I can find Durkee's
and that weird chili sauce in the jar in the shape of a sphere. :)
Oh, and a lot of my beloved William's Foods spices from good old KC.
(but not the chili seasoning for some reason)
