I see you changed it.  The one I have for you is NAtional 2-9000.

Unfortunately as of right now the Chickens are unlikely to be in attendance but we have Oct. 20 marked on the calendar and hope to see you all in Milwaukee.

What the heck is a  p****?
It is an unkind way of calling someone a chicken, that also won't get you kicked off the board because IT'S JUST STARS!!  It could also stand for party, porst, potty, patty, prude, etc. Although with what we went through on our last voyage to Cunis, (see quote from #1 son (in law) on previous page about Culvers) I am starting to re-think the name calling because that was some horrible weather right there.

"Albert the Alley Cat???  You're much older than I suspected."

My dishpan hands never gave me away.

They took that guy (Lynn) off the Empire Commercials & that is a shame.

I think I'm just going to wear my eatin' pants (some people call them yoga pants; tomayto, tomahto)  & bring a jacket just in case. And of course an umbrella. Which I will most likely leave in Gyp's car.

P****, as in a certain Russian girl punk band, recently convicted of hooliganism?  Not sure why everyone is afraid to say their name.  You take a room full of cats, throw in a handful of catnip, and whaddaya get?

It doesn't matter that they took Lynn Hauldren off the Empire Carpet commercials, because he is now deceased.

I know, but to me, he *was* Empire.

I'm old enough to remember when the commercials said 312-588-2300. And when Zion & Gurnee's area code was 312. " />

Heck, the entire northeast corner of Illinois was 312.  Now the same area is covered by five area codes; 312, 773, 847, 708, and 630.  Plus a dedicated cellphone area code; 224.

Buddy

P.S. Potential good news (for the tour, at least): Watching ABC overnight news; they're showing Issac being delayed by at least a day, and taking a more southerly path.  According to current predictions, the storm will be moving through central Missouri on Saturday, passing through Illinois--but south of Chicago--on Sunday.

Our thoughts go out to our Contingent friends, ChuckL50 and his Significant Other, in NOLA.

Re:Dog Days of Summer Tour: The Contingent 2012/08/30 09:22:00 (permalink)
Actually, 224 is being assigned to non-cellular numbers, too.

Anyway, back on track, I think we should start the day at Edzo's with whoever wants to get there early starting at Bennison's, then end at Capt. Porky's.  It will make for a shorter drive at the end of the night for our Wisconsin friends.

What time for Edzo's?  12? 1?  Maybe 90 mins earlier for Bennison's?  It is possible that they'd run out of a given item [*cough*maplebacondoughnuts*cough*] so earlier is better.  Bennison's and Edzo's are walking distance from each other, so if the weather's nice, there's lots of shopping and stuff in between.

ETA: And just a heads up, the only real rule at Edzo's is that you don't claim a table until after you've placed your order.  They take this rule very seriously.  I've been there when it's really busy and have always gotten a table by the time my food was ready, if not immediately after placing the order.  There is a strong possibility that we may not all be able to sit at one table, but will have to be in small groups.

I have never experienced the owner, Eddie, to be anything but gracious and professional, but then, I've always followed the rule.

They offer two options- 8oz char-grilled or 4oz griddled burgers (you can double and triple the griddled ones).  You can also upgrade the beef from standard (but great quality) ground beef to an organic and/or grass-fed beef.  They usually have 2-3 different premium beefs to choose from for $2-$4 extra per 4oz.  I have had both the standard and upgraded beef and can attest to the fact that they are both great tasting and do have distinctly different flavors.  If you're sharing a couple different burgers, it may be worth getting one standard and one upgraded one to see the difference.

They have a bunch of french fries to choose from, too- regular, cheese, old (they've been kept in the fryer a little longer to achieve maximum brownness and crispiness), garlic, crazy (chili, cheese and onion), Buffalo, loaded (cheese, bacon, sour cream, green onion), Taylor Street fries (Italian Beef au jus, sweet and hot peppers), truffle salt and parmesan, and angry (spicy).

If you still have room after that, they have great hand-dipped shakes, and not just chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry- they have Nutella, peanut butter, Oreo, banana, coffee, maple and one or two daily special flavors, too.  On the 26th, they had blackberry, but I'm not sure if that's still around.

We'll arrive at Edzo's by noon and stop at Bennison's first. If we miss the bacon/maple bars, the Parisienne macaroons are worth the trip. They sell good cookies, cup cakes, and pastries, too.  Don't plan on sitting as a group at Edzo's. On a Saturday, it ain't gonna happen. Vienna Beef is having their Labor Day Tent Sale until 3pm. The deal of the day is a case of natural casing seven inch hot dogs for $30 (70 natural casing hot dogs), if they have any left. They'll be frozen, so bring a cooler. The sandwiches at Cemitas Puebla are large and can easily be shared by two, pace yourself accordingly. Nina & I will be splitting from the group to go to Grant Park for Summer Dance: 6-7 Free Tango Lessons & 7:30-9:30 Dancing.

I will go to my grave remembering that number and UPtown 3-9108 my parents phone number. We will try to make it to the Oak Creek Park 'n Ride at 8:30. I understand the train leaves the station within 5 minutes of that time so we will be there. If someone's car is too full, we have lots of room. Not a fancy car, like that fancy man Gyp, but a good solid roomy Korean Elantra Touring Model which seems appropriate.

Perhaps the early arrivers could pick up a few extra Bacon Maple Bars at Bennison, which the Roadhouse clan would happily pay you for.

It seems to me that the Oak Creek Park and Ride is on Ryan Road? Just want to make sure. I'll call Gyp or X1 tomorrow morning to confirm that.

If we get to Bennie's in good time we'll be sure to pick up a few baconmapledonuts for our friends. We may pick off all the bacon, though....

So, the Wisconsinites are planning on getting to Bennison's...what about the Illinoisans?  I know the Roadhouses aren't...I think we should shoot for 11:00am at Bennison's.  Anyone who wants to get there earlier is welcome to, I'll be there around 11.

Will any of the drivers not have a GPS device available to them, either their own or one from a passenger?

I'm working on the handout, just want to know how detailed I need to be about directions, or if just a few maps will do.

Thanks!

Edzo's at noon.
Ravenswood Remix, Cemitas Puebla, Black Dog Gelato, Captain Porkys.

Rain or shine.

If you need any other details, I'm at your house right now, so you'll get them soon.

Q, Oak Creek is correct. Why in the blue **** are we leaving @ 8:30AM if we don't have to be there until 11AM?? OH YEAH, CONSTRUCTION! Time for me to buy a train pass & a sleeping bag.

Hopefully they'll still have some.  Earlier than 11 just wasn't looking realistic and if the weather's crappy, there's not a lot to do in between Bennison's and Edzo's.

Oh CSD, you always make such a Hullabaloo out of these things.  I do think we've got some pretty good singers in the group though.  We could go Where The Action Is and have us a dandy Hootenanny after the next tour.

Buddy,
We sang our own rendition of the Animal's version of "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" at the last stop after washing down deep fried crustaceans with well water infused Coke products.

I'd like to thank Abe Froman! Besides being Chicago's Sausage King, Abe proved to be Chicago Tour Director King. Keeping track of Contingent members is somewhat like getting an army of cockroachs to all march in a straight line. The street fair was a brlliant idea and allowed us all to catch our breaths and regain an appetite. Putting the last stop closer to the cheese curtain was thoughtful and appreciated. Hail Abe!

Re:Dog Days of Summer Tour: The Contingent 2012/09/02 12:08:34 (permalink)
An echo of thanks to the venerable Abe for organizing the tour and selecting great places for us to stop at. Also, many thanks to MilwFoodlovers for hauling me around for most of the trip, and to Gyp for shuttling me back to the Milwaukee metro area at the end of the day. The day's start at Bennison's was an excellent idea, and though the Maple Bacon Bars had vanished long before we got there, the other goods--especially the macarons--were delightful.  Our stop at Edzo's for burgers was fun, and I particularly enjoyed the truffle parmesan fries.  Next time I'll have to make sure my burger is ordered medium-rare, though.... The quick stop at Wiener and Still Champion was a nice surprise, and I'm glad I was able to meet guspas. The fries there were excellent, too, and I can't wait to return and have a serious meal.  The Ravenswood Remix afterward was quirky and enjoyable, and I loved the cemita al pastor sandwich afterward at Cemitas Puebla (it didn't hurt, either, to have a couple of fried shrimp from Red Hot Ranch, provided by Buddy Roadhouse). I loved the goat cheese cashew gelato at Black Dog afterward, yet I wish I had also tried the Bluberry French Toast gelato. Oh well, next time. By the final stop, Captain Porky's in Wadsworth, I was quite full, but I know I'll enjoy working on the pulled pork, brisket, and hot link I bought to go from the counter. Gotta have something to eat on Labor Day, after all.  As always, it was fun seeing so many of you there, and I hope to see you at the Milwaukee Tour in October, if not before.
