Dogs N' Suds

Does anyone remember this fast food chain? The one I remember was in Whitehall, Michigan near Muskeogan. I was there in Scout camp in the early 80's and that place had great hot dogs and root beer!

We had a Dog & Suds drive-in in North Canton, OH when I was a kid in the early 70's. I remember picking the onions off the coneys in the back seat of our station wagon when I was about 6 years old! I remember it fondly, but by the time I was in junior high, they were long gone.

I watched the Dog n Suds burn down in Hamilton, OH in the early 60's when I was a kid. Was never replaced. As far as I know none exist today.

There was a dog n suds in Bloomington, Il when I was growing up. I applied for a job there in high school and was told very rudely they weren't hiring, although they had run an ad for the past 3 weeks. . . . .I won't hold a grudge, though. . . .never tried thier food.

I remember a Dog n Suds in a small rural town in MO close to a state park we hiked and camped in as BOy Scouts. Occasionaly one of the dads would stop by on the way home for a treat. I prefered their root beer over A&W.

I actually drove by one of these that i did not know existed the other day. Went to Muskegon MI to visit one of the last reamining Mister Quicks and discovered while looking for it that there was a Dog N Suds across the street. The Mister Quick was hard to find since it was inside a gas station

That's interesting that you mention both Dog N Suds and Mr. Quick, as I remember both of those restaurants from my childhood in northern and middle Illinois. I can't remember the last place I saw a Dog N Suds ... Amboy maybe? If I remember right, weren't they drive-in type restaurants?
There was a Mr. Quick in Normal, Illinois on the main street south of Illinois State University campus when I was little. They were about a block or 2 north of the McDonald's on the same but opposite side of the street. The one thing I do remember most about Mr. Quick were the shakes - very good. I understand Muskegon, MI is the only place they exist anymore.

There was one in Springfield, MO, on north Glenstone. The last time I ate there was in my late college years (probably mid 1980). I remember liking them.

Last Sunday my son & I headed over from Grand Rapids to check out the newly renovated Dog N Suds at 4221 Grand Haven Rd, Muskegon, MI for lunch. The last D-N-S closed up in our town over 35 years ago.

    http://blog.mlive.com/chronicle/2008/06/old_dog_new_tricks.html

I had a hankerin for a "TexasBurger Basket" (char-grilled double beef with a 3-piece bun lettuce, cheese, tarter sauce and a big dollop of coney sauce on the heel) and even though it's been over 35 years since I last had one it was every bit as good as I remembered it.

Great slaw and fries and topped off with a tall frosty mug fresh out of the freezer filled with some of the best creamy rootbeer (diet for me now) you would ever want.

When folks say you can never go back they wern't talking about Dog-N-Suds this place really brings back a lot of memories served up with some great drive-in fare. The Muskegon location is open year-round (The Montague Drive-In is April thru September) so if you live within a hundred miles or so of Muskegon you really need to check it out for yourself and bring your camera!

Next time its gonna be the "Coney Dog Classic Combo" (with an extra dog) and I'll take home a half gallon of that great amber brew.

Check out all of the great stuff on their menu http://montague.dog-n-suds.com/page.php?3

After reading the Muskegon Chronicle story it appears to me that David Hosticka cares for his restaurants as much as a true independent might. Chain or not, that's good.

There are two Dog n' Suds drive-ins in the Lafayette IN area, both on Sagamore Parkway/US 52. The one in West Lafayette is new ( built about three years ago ), and the one in Lafayette proper is an original from the 1950s. It's my understanding that the owner of these two also owns the rights to the name, logo and recipes. I loved this chain as a teenager and that hasn't changed; the Charco-burgers are still great and so is the overall experience of eating there.

Hi Westley.  I live about ten miles from the Dog N Suds of Charleston, IL (Mattoon).  Welcome to east central Illinois.  It is open only during late Spring, Summer and early Fall.  Their root beer is excellent - about as smooth as I have ever tasted.

Mike, you're a lucky man. I wish I lived only ten miles from a Dog n' Suds. Last Saturday, I drove a four-hour round trip just to eat at the original location in Lafayette IN. It was worth it, though... great food and fantastic root beer!
