Your local St. Vincent de Paul Society might be one place to check. If they're not directly helping in the South, they may know someone reliable who is.

I would certainly donate to either The Salvation Army or to St. Vincent De Paul Society. Either one is a great organization, and I would be happy if anything I donated went to help others. My parents were Salvation Army officers, and they served in Fairbanks and Anchorage Alaska after training in San Francisco, then moved back east and served in Houlton, Westport and Waterville Maine, Meriden CT, Fair Haven NJ, Elmira, Geneva and Rochester NY, and for a very brief time 125th Street in Harlem. As a child and as a teenager, I only noticed people trying to do good for others. (getting back to the original poster - sometimes people are people and do things that are human. That doesn't mean bad behavior is accepted or encouraged). Yep - I'd give my money (or clothes or food) to the Sallies. Now that I married a Catholic gal and have a son in seminary to be a Priest - I'd give to St. Vincent De Paul as well. There are a lot of charities out there. Some are better than others at making sure the money you donate is used to serve the community.

Sallies? Boy, I haven't heard that term in a long, long time. There was a time when I knew Salvation Army centers as Sally Joints. They fed you and slept you, and let you be. In later years I came to know the Salvation Army for the great work they did for people during disasters. I donate to them as often as I can. They do wonderful things for people.

Michael Hoffman Wonderful things. Yes they do! I always enjoy watching for the Salvation Army Band every year in the Tournament of Roses Parade playing "Onward Christian Soldiers" because they truly are.
