Mr Hoffman--i find it hard to believe that an old New Englander like yourself never went to an orchard for fresh cider and passed up on the greatest donuts in the world--cider doughnuts!--they were fresh homemade and wonderful-----for those of you who don't know them--they are made with cider but otherwise the are just lke a Plain cake doughnut and they are commonly available at the same time as the cider they are made from! BTW--plain cake is my usuall as there are NO cider here in Okla--or darn near anywhere else out side of apple cider country.

Wow! No, I never heard of cider donuts. Cider, yes. And I've certainly eaten donuts while sipping cider. Now I'm wondering how and why I missed out on cider donuts.

Michael, Do you remember Oronoque Orchards in Stratford, they had the best Apple cider, apple pies..........no donuts.......but they had a real big apple press and you could smell apples for miles.............Nothing wrong with a plain cake donut. I would have also loved to have a salt horn with my coffee this morning, do you remember those ??????????

Cider donuts are made with some illegal drug in them, I'm convinced. I can eat my body weight in cider donuts and still want to go back for more.

AHI MPLS No crullers listed. Other. There WERE crullers in the first pass of writing the poll, but we only have ten slots, so it lost out. Perhaps we should have dropped the donut hole option instead!

PNWCHEF, I don't remember any orchard in Stratford, but I do remember salt horns. They weren't my favorite thing to have with morning coffee -- a buttered hard roll was.

There wasn't an option for "I don't like donuts." We used to have a donut shop in downtown Waukesha called...are you ready? The Donut Shoppe. Their cinnamon sugar donuts were good, but donuts are just one of those things I never "got". I'll eat them if they're free at work, but I would not purchase them, nor would I go out of my way for one. I may have one if I'm buying coffee @ DD's. But even that's rare now that DD's coffee is sold in grocery stores & Walgreens. I voted for the Custard filled though because if I'm going to eat a donut, it had to be bavarian creme with chocolate frosting.

Michael Hoffman PNWCHEF, I don't remember any orchard in Stratford, but I do remember salt horns. They weren't my favorite thing to have with morning coffee -- a buttered hard roll was. We used to dunk the Salt Horns in our coffee or hot chocolate, I could taste them as we speak. A fresh baked hard roll was great anytime of the day, great for a bologna sandwich. We would know the exact time the Rye bread was baked at the bakery on East Main St in BPT. Sometimes we would go early and the counter person would say " Sorry son, we can't slice the Rye bread, It's to hot" the sweetest words I ever heard. Do I need to tell you how good that rye bread was with butter melting over it.............You could take your donuts and stick them in your bread box buddy, give me a hot loaf of bread and real butter, and I'm in Heaven..................PNWC

No, I have a good memory for things like buttered freshly-baked rye. By the way, I used to (shh, don't tell anyone) dunk my buttered hard roll in my coffee.

Cider donuts are indeed very good, I'll take a sour cream variety every time though!

I've never, ever heard of a cider donut. We used to have Dunkin Donuts here and I just loved the idea of a handle on them for grasping while dunking... Wouldn't want to get my fingers in my coffee. The best donuts ever dunked were the beignets at Cafe du Monde. I'll take two orders, please.... light sugar.

mar52 I've never, ever heard of a cider donut. I think you have to live somewhere that has apple orchards. Around here, you can't walk ten feet in the fall without tripping over an apple orchard with a coffee shop attached to it.

I love that place! I live very near Minnehaha Parkway and we often ride our bikes all the way to the falls , with a stop at Mello to fuel up! They always keep a few crullers plain (no icing) and those are my very very favorites.
