Woo Pogo! I have to admit, in great shame, that my pocketbook dictates my lunch all too often, and the 1$ dbl cheeseburger at the local McDonald's is pretty good for the price. Fortunately, I am usually able to get one right off the grill, which makes a world of difference to the taste. The doubles at Steak n Shake are pretty good as well.

The double at Superdawg (see Roadfood text) in Chicago has my vote. It is called the Whoopskercheesie or something like that.

Actually, it's a triple, but any excuse to gaze longingly on this beauty from The Hamburger Inn of Sioux Falls, SD, while also congratulating Pogo:

MMMMMMM In-n-out. I'll be in Las Vegas early next week and that may be my first stop off the plane. They even have a store there where they sell the full line of t-shirts and other paraphenalia. Pogo, where do we send the gifts

Am i the only one that thinks the bread in the first pic looks unbelievably dry and tasteless and well, too much of it? The bread in the second pic is also too much but it does look decent enough to eat plain with some nice cold butter.

The WC burger (the first picture) looks almost like a caricacature of the real thing. The real burgers in no way look so organized and stiff....particularly after they are manually stuffed into individual boxes.

Congrats Pogo! I let my eldest daughter have a 4 x 4 (4 patties, 4 slices of cheese) from In and Out on her birthday.. crazy overwhelming burger... but I'm not really an In and Out fan myself.. After scouring Fresno from funky little burger joint to big chain, the best tasting burger I've found is at Denny's of all places! Go figure.

Aha, I knew I had a picture of an In-N-Out double somewhere. It's not picture-perfect, but it tasted pretty perfect:

Oops, it wasn't a diet soda after all.... ...but still, don't you want a full sized drink with a sandwich that size? :-)

I guess I should ask Mr Rushmore: how many posts do you have to have to ascend to the 20x20 cheeseburger ranking? :-)

Last January I happened to have a job interview in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Being a good Roadfood fan, I had diligently researched ahead of time, and thus proceeded directly to the Hamburger Inn upon my arrival in Sioux Falls. Folks, those are GOOD burgers. I had to go back again the next day on my way out of town. If you're ever anywhere NEAR Sioux Falls, take a trip over and have one. I wound up not taking the job, but the hamburgers at the Hamburger Inn made it a really tough call. (I wound up in South Carolina, where there is, of course, plenty of good roadfood.)

If you're ever on Beale Street, treat yourself to a double-double from Dyer's. The orginal location opened up in Midtown Memphis during the early part of the last century. They moved once before again moving a few years ago to Beale. Anyhow, they deep fry their burgers in a cast iron Dutch oven looking thing and slap the burgers on a bun with a pickle and some mustard and American cheese slices. They claim that they have never ever changed the grease in that pot - only added to it over the years as grease was lost to attrition. It is without a doubt the best burger I have sampled - and I have sampled many others. But they are surely not very healthy. On the infrequent occasion that I eat there, I joke that I need to go ahead and schedule an appointment for by-pass surgery too.

Just went to a new local place today.. Mars Drive In... dunno if it's a chain or what.. but it was rather disappointing.. the burger was alright, but the fries were limp and burnt and wayyy too salty, the shake tasted of pudding instead of ice cream..and no forks or sporks are provided for the messy chili cheese fries... I can't see going back.. so the search for local burger greatness continues..

Culvers is one of my favorites here in Northeast Wisconsin. Cinders is really good for the fact they do make their burgers over real charcoal fire. Dicks Drive-in in Kaukauna is also good. Thats one thing here, if you are looking for a good burger place you will have no problem finding one here.
