Downtown Philadelphia near the Marriott

I have a week of workshops at the Marriott. None of the cool restaurants I'm finding are nearby and I will only have 90 minute lunch breaks. Any recommendations within walking distance? And if you live in Philly, be sure to check out the meet and greet thread. Thanks!!!!

I posted this a while back...very close to the Marriott, my husband has been at the Marriott RI (next door) for the last month. Was just there this past weekend...we ate at many places including Tony Luke's (which was everything we dreamed for and got!!!). However, by far, and we ate high end and low end, the best place was: McGillan's Tavern This place has been in operation since 1860 and hopefully will go on for another 150 years....cheap great food and wonderful drafts on tap. The staff could not have been friendlier and the other patrons treated us like we were old friends.

Check out DiNic's for roast pork sandwich (with long hots) and the awesome pastrami reuben at Herchell's East Side. They are both in the Reading Terminal Market next door to the Marriott. There are also some fun places to try in Chinatown within a few blocks of your hotel. Lots of tasty items also at DiBruno's "megastore" on Chestnut near 17th. Check out all the prepared foods upstairs. If you have not been, check out Pat's and Geno's just to say you have been. (Cab ride) Excellent dinner choice is La Locanda del Ghiottone at 3rd. and Cherry. It's a great little BYOB Italian place. Lots of great places to eat in Philly. let me know if I can suggest anywhere else. Hope you enjoy your stay. Let us know where you eat.

I second the Reading Terminal recommendation. It's basically across the street from the back of your hotel (I'm assuming you'll be at the Marriot at 12th and Market), and you can get a sample of all of the major Philly foods there, as well as PA-Dutch and a variety of ethnic foods. It's one of the great indoor Farmer's Markets/foodcourts in the country.

If you want a tremendous variety of options go to the Reading Terminal Market - it is downtown not too far from City Hall and it is huge city market with all kinds of fresh food purveyors and vendors. This is a historic market that goes back to the very early days of the city. The old Reading Terminal Railroad station sits atop the market. If you have time for a cab ride there is also South Street area which has a lot of restaurants (I would probably save this for your evening outing). There is also the famous Melrose Diner in this general area. You also have Pat's Steaks and Gino's Steaks, world famous for their Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwiches, Pat's having invented the sandwich. Good luck and enjoy.
