Yodels, Yankee Doodles, Devil Dogs, Ring Dings etc.

I grew up in Brooklyn and Drakes was my favorite. I liked them better than Hostess and Tasteycake.

It is hard to find Drakes here in Texas. Sometimes they are in some stores and once in a while they have Drakes at the bakery thrift store. Drakes does not succeed here probably because they do not back their products with any advertising.

Whenever I visit New York or Florida, I bring some boxes of Drakes home with me.

I can't find Devil Dogs here in Ohio at all. I used to get them shipped in from Connecticut when my daughter lived there.

There's a Wonder Bread outlet store near me, and their plastic bags have the Drake's logo on them, along with the logos of all the other Continental Baking brands, but no one here has ever heard of them.

Drakes has only recently begun to invade Virginia (the same way the Union did over 140 years ago). I grew-up with Devil Dogs, Ring-Dings and Yodels and, as a northern sympathizer and transplant, welcome their overdue arrival. Drakes is just far superior than the Hostess, Dolly Madison, Little Debbie and, God forbid, Lance products down in these here parts!

They have always been in South Florida.

I went to a Drakes outlet store in St. Louis, MO. once, so they are prevalent there (when I visited).

I think the cream is sweeter and creamier and the cakes are better tasting and seem to be more like freshly baked cake. Hostess is fine, but I prefer Drakes.

I hesitate to mention the name because I know the enmity some have for them, but...if there's a Wal-Mart Supercenter near you, they carry Drakes Cakes around the country.

                Lucky Bishop,
You mentioned about Drakes being available at WallMarts around the country. In another thread it was mentioned that Tasteycake are also at Wallmarts. Not so in our area the only kind of Bakery products at our W M is Little Debbys, & some Hostess. I asked about Tasty Kakes and no one knew what I was talking about. Do you think it is because we live in a small town [Mansfield, OH] or are we Ohio folks just being discriminated against?

Retired: Is it a regular Wal-Mart or a Wal-Mart Supercenter, with a full-service grocery store attached? If it's the latter, I don't know why they wouldn't have Drakes -- WMSC has only one distribution center, and theoretically, all the stores have almost exactly the same merchandise mix.

Which is why my wife and I drive the 90 miles from Boston to Ware, MA, every couple of months, to visit the only WMSC in New England. I'm from the south, and this is the only place within 500 miles where I can stock up on things like Ranch Style Beans, Pioneer country gravy mix and White Lily flour!

                    Lou:

When I was growing up in the NY area I always knew these as Crumb Cakes. By any name, they are sinfully wonderful. Also, I vaguely remember a Seinfeld episode where Drake's Crumb Cakes got lots of mention.

As a natural reflex, whenever I see snack cakes, I always look for Drakes. There are no Drakes in any of the Walmarts in Austin or Round Rock including the superstore.
H-E-B had them for a little while, but they were pulled because there was no advertising and so, sales were flat.

Does anyone remember Dugan's? They used to deliver on regular routes, and their crumb cakes and coffee cakes were wonderful.

                          Lucky Bishop,

It appears you may have hit the nail on the head. What we have here in Mansfield, is a regular Wallmart. I read in the paper last week that it is planned to convert it to a W M super center within two years, so maybe then I can start to access some of the goodies, I see mentioned at that time. Thanks

I always preferred Drakes over Hostess. Devil Dogs and Yodels were my favorites and the Coffee Cake is the best. I think Drakes is most well known on the east coast.

I grew up with Drakes in Boston, and have always preferred them to the competition. My favorites are coffee cake and funny bones. I don't think either were part of the original group of snacks, which I remember being ring dings, yodels, yankee doodles and devil dogs. My wife, who is from NYC, also grew up with them. We lived in Austin, TX for many years and they simply were not available; I agree with the no advertising explanation. This was an OK situation, except that when my wife became pregnant with our oldest daughter, she developed a food craving for ring dings that NOTHING else would satisfy. My mother used to buy them by the case and ship them to us in Austin! Great stuff.

Now I know I have to visit Canada, eh? I've got four missions now: turn up every 45 by Motherlode on Revolver, drink every good local Canadian beer that I run across (I'll skip your nationals unless they've got something different than U. S. national brand offerings), research local cuisine(s) by eating at diners and mom-and-pop cafe's (not possessive: there's no accent mark on this keyboard), and search out food stores for things I've never heard of here. What will fill my car up faster - me, records, beer, or food?!?
Nobody's got any idea of cheese curds or poutines here. It's time I did some research and wrote about my findings. See you come May or thereaboats, eh? - Toronno, here I come.

                                                  P. S. I've never tried Drake's Cakes nor Tastycake, either. What am I myssyng? You're right - Lance leaves a bit to be desired.

Hey Ort: I get cheese curds all the time in Minnesota. They are great with evening libations. I even get them fried in the Mall of America in Minneapolis. I get them cold every place else in the twin cities area.

I would like to put in a word for Drake's Swiss Rolls. They had them on the market for many years (one big roll per package) and then took them off. They reintoduced them as two smaller rolls per package and then they seemed to disappear. Hostess makes Swiss Rolls but then they put a yucky chocolate coating on top (gilding the lily) which, as far as I'm concerned, completely ruins them. I far prefer them to Devil Dogs because Devil Dogs are much dryer in comparison. You can't eat one without drinking something.

I lived in Arizona for 5 years and then moved back to New York for a year where I once again indulged in Devil Dogs. I moved back to Arizona two weeks ago only to discover that Devil Dogs aren't available here. I guess I must not have thought about them in the 5 previous years I lived here. Anyway, in my desperation I logged on to Hometown Treats and the showed not only Devil Dogs but the big Swiss Rolls as well. I ordered 15 boxes yesterday. This all seems too good to be true, I'm afraid they will write me back and say they are no longer available. I'll post it if they are. In the meantime, I'm thinking I should start an online business myself supplying this stuff and only charge the cost of the product and the actual shipping. Fifteen boxes cost me almost $92 with shipping. I now know that I'm not the only one in the world with this kind of craving. I have a twin sister that is suffering a Tastykake Chocolate cupcake craving so I guess I will have to get those for her. BTW, I also checked Wal-Mart and they only had Hostess and Little Debbie, although it wasn't a supercenter.

I see that Canada has something called Passion Flakie, well does anyone remember that Drakes had something similar? I can't think of what they were called? Can anyone? I am desperately seeking them.

                                                          Can anyone help me?

Coincidentally, I checked the above link not realizing that this was the same Bagel Oasis that was my neighborhood bagel joint when I was growing up in Freh Meadows, NY. We would stop there every Sunday morning to get a dozen or so bagels, bagel twists, and bialys along with a Sunday New York Times. These are truly great crunchy, chewy NYC water bagels.

Now that I'm aware they can be ordered on-line, guess what we're having for brunch this Sunday?
