Dream list of Christmas gift food
Mon, 12/15/03 8:26 AM
( permalink)
As I browze through the Christmas catalogs and do online shopping, I come across great food gifts that, if money was not an object, I would just love to see under my Christmas tree. My very favorite would be 2 lbs of lobster meat from Maine shipped to me once a month for a year! I can taste all those lobster rolls right now. I would not turn my nose up at a Niman Ranch strip or standing rib roast either.

Oooh clothier....check it out: https://www.dartagnan.com/index.asp According to their website, he was the 4th musketeer, so everybody can rest assured that the candy bar remains intact.

One more thing...those cherries from the Harry and David catalogue. They have retail stores but I'm not a fan. Too goofy and overpriced. There's a cheese shop in Granville, MA I miss heading to but now they're on the web...www.store.yahoo.com/granville. Some nice cellar aged cheddar and apples for us somtimes homesick ex-New Englanders!

One of those big gift baskets from Stew Leonard's. I got one a couple of years ago and it was just great! There isn't much that they have to offer that I wouldn't like!

Used to get the box of fresh citrus from Forida every Spring when my parents wintered there. That was good. I have received an assortment of english muffins and other yummies from Wolfermann's a few times from our neighbor. I'd love to get a case of lobster tails, and some really great steaks from one of the better mail-order butchers.

I'd start with some things from Connecticut. I'd love: a White Clam pie from Modern Apizza, some steamed cheeseburgers from O'Rourke's, and a few New Englanders from Super Duper Weenie. Please send some lobsters from either Young's or Trenton Bridge Lobster pound in Maine. Don't forget my cheesesteaks from Pat's, Geno's, Mama's, etc., etc. in Philly.

To revive this thread for the season.... I hope no one objects that Linda does the websites for the Virginia companies that I mention here. She gets no payment for sales. Truth is that we love the products and buy them ourselves. So we are definitely biased. Some that I really like: Savoie's Smoked Sausage from Louisiana (expensive to ship because it's frozen). http://www.savoiesfoods.com My favorite are the smoked pork sausages (mild). Great for breakfast. The Good Earth Peanut Company http://www.goodearthpeanuts.com My favorite are the Gourmet Redskins in a tin. (From Virginia*) You probably won't want the salted "Planters Peanuts" again. Real Smithfield Hams http://www.smithfieldfarms.com Also from Virginia*. I would like to see what some others really like for themselves, as well as like to order as gifts for others. Frank *Linda does these Virginia websites. She gets no participation or commissions from sales of the products.

The grocery store near me has two live lobsters in its tank - the guy at the seafood counter told me they're both around 10-pounds - and they've been there since before Thanksgiving. Kind of sad, they just sit there while the little ones climb all over them. He said they'd be around $120 - just in case anyone wants to surprise someone with one of those crawling around under their tree on Christmas morning.

I vote for Burger's Smokehouse. My husband's aunt is the sales manager for Burger's in California, MO. Tonight he made split pea soup with a Burger ham shank. It was seriously wonderful . Christmas presents from Burger's are always enjoyable. Burger's is a small company of people who are very proud of there product. And it all makes great gifts. It won't hang around collecting dust, because it will be gone in no time!

Heh heh... when I was an adolescent, in a Jewish family, the fast of Yom Kippur usually occurred around the time that the Christmas food catalogues came around. I remember lying around reading catalogues from Harry and David, or some company in the Midwest, and I would drool for hours over photos of these huge gift towers consisting of Dobosh tortes, 5 kinds of cheese, summer sausage, chocolate "moose," etc., etc. I'll bet the food was pretty lousy... not that we ever actually ordered any...

Ed, you should've had me as a daughter, my parents will receive a 10 lb. box of red King crab legs from Fisherman's Express via FedEx tomorrow. As for me, I'm so sick of looking at crab that I hope I don't see any for the next 6 months! My mother said she's gonna send me some Italian hazelnut torte and some nutroll.........heaven! Oh, and Santa, could you please put a bottle of white truffle oil in my stocking?

Merry X-Mas! I'd love to receive some hardwood smoked sausage and maybe some cheese! I wish I had some links to post as ya guys did above, but I'm not picky! And Jennifer, tell your old man that if the food gift is good, you'll be talking about it all year! (Then he'll have a challenge to out do himself next year)...

My wife has been making sugared pecans and giving them away. They're easy to make, a bit expensive, but people love them.
