Drive-thru radio frequency hijacked at Burger King Mon, 12/20/04 12:30 PM (permalink)
Hi All -

IMO this was one of the funnier food stories of the year.

I hope this isn't a repost. I did a search of past forum posts and wasn't able to find anything referencing this.

Happy Holidays to all.

Nothing new in terms of originality on the part of the pranksters. I remember reading a similar news report a few years ago of the same thing, but with McDonalds as the source of woe. Apparently the headsets these fast food places use work on an open (and common) frequency shared by many baby monitoring devices, or the inexpensive personal communicators (walkie-talkies). Yes, McD and B-King could spend more and get communicators that worked on less common frequencies, or had built in security like digital encrytion possibly coupled with spread spectrum, but that would cost a lot more.

What is interesting is the pranksters had to be close to be able to overpower the restaurants head set. Shouldn't be too hard to catch if they do it too many times to the same store.

Being a Ham Radio Operator, the simplicity of doing this prank makes me wonder why more people have'nt done it! They've also had similar problems with NASCAR and Indy Car teams getting fan interference on occasion.
