Driving from Nashville to Charlottesville (I-40 and 81). Any suggestions?

I don't mind leaving the highway but time is a factor. Don't eat pork or shellfish and interested in non-chain, local  eating.

The no pork or shellfish eliminates several suggestions, among then some excellent BBQ in Roanoke.
 
So, here are three I recommend highly: 
http://www.mrsrowes.com/index.html ---  Mrs. Rowe's is just a wonderful Southern Restaurant.  Staunton, VA on 250 at the intersection of I-81 and I-64.  It was there well before the interstates were built.  Just search "rowe's" in Forum Seatch and you will not only find lots good said about her, but also many prior "Roadfooder's" suggestiond for the trip you will undertake. 
 
Crozet Pizza: http://www.crozetpizza.net/  ---  featured in USA Today as one of the 51 best in the country and rave-reviewed here and elsewhere.  Crozet is just West of C'ville.
 
For someplace a little fancier, The Bavarian Chef - just up 29 from Charlotessville.  http://www.thebavarianchef.com/  .
 
Also, when you are in C'ville you are only a short drive from The Inn at Little Washington:  http://www.theinnatlittlewashington.com/ .  I mention this because I have been "yelled at" for not mentioning that this legendary ("Google" it!) establishment is in the general area.
