Drunk Drivers Face Arrest at Fast Food Joints

Well this article may be just the ticket to cause a bar owner to want you to become his food vendor and offer you a spot right outside of his front door , or better yet right inside his beer garden. When the average driver gets a DUI in Illinois he or she spends over $3000.00, for attorneys, court, testing, and school. So that person spends a lot less inside his average bar for the next year, a good food vendor could be a business saver. By the way when this sort of law enforcement practice starts in one state, if it’s proven effective, it spreads very quickly to other states. Arizona Drunk Drivers Face Arrest at Fast Food Joints Sunday, June 14, 2009 TUCSON, Ariz. — Drunken Arizona drivers with the late-night munchies may soon be getting more than chicken strips at drive-through windows. The Pima County Sheriff's Department has a new campaign targeting drunken driving. Operation Would U Like Fries, or Operation WULF, will put undercover deputies inside 24-hour fast-food restaurants to spot impaired drivers placing their orders. Sgt. Doug Hanna, a DUI unit supervisor, says if deputies notice someone with classic symptoms of impairment — slurred speech, red or watery eyes or beer breath — they will have a uniformed deputy stationed outside pull the driver over. Hanna says money for the intermittent program is coming from a $128,000 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

isn't that entrapment? or that doesn't matter to the courts anymore?

Entrapment is encouraging the illegal behavior, I don't see that here...

sk bob isn't that entrapment? or that doesn't matter to the courts anymore? No it's not. Not, anymore than a road blocks....... er safety check. But If I were a manager at a fast food restaurant I’d tell them I didn’t want my place involved. But let’s not turn this into a discussion on the law, law enforcement methods, or some other legal issues. It’s a very big foot in the door for food vendors that are needing a made to order presentation, that should cause a bar owner to welcome a food vendor with open arms. In fact it should be enough of an incentive that the larger (more popular bar) owners to offer help from bouncers and staff, so that the food vendor feels safe, and is a protected class. I always thought if I were in the liquor business I’d open the kitchen two hours before closing and start serving breakfast to my customers. Why shouldn’t I get the profit from the food rather than the joint down the street? The down side is the bar owner will at some point want a percentage of the action, or invest some money and build a kitchen. But that could be years away. Jack

Good news for me, as I just got set up outside a bar and the bar owner (and the drunks) loves the idea. Even moreso once I show him this story, even though it's not in my state. :P Do you have a link to the story by any chance?

Heres a warning for Russ and anyother Greene Co dwellers. Along 444 they have a new trick. Almost to Enon, my wife was pulled over by the Highway Patrol. Its a road block on steroids. They give the car a saftey check. If you dont pass they can tow the car. A fix it ticket is an option they can deny! Along with that they do the basic, sobriety, seatbelt, childrestraint, insurance deal. It took about 20 min. Then the put a sticker in your window thats supposed to prevent future stop checks. Starting by the bowling alley near 275 they also have the base police in the act to help out! Did you know that they patrol that area of 444 for speeders? The kicker is any ticket by them is Federal and much more expensive!

I have driven after drinking once in my life and it scared the hell out of me that night. I was so sick from drinking and smoking weed ( 20 years ago ) that I went to the emergency room and my doctor was working. He took one look at me and sent me to a private room. He came a little while later, checked me out and gave me something to sleep. He woke me up at the end of his shift and told me he would not tell my grandmother if I would never do it again. I have never driven again since then when I drink. Here in Cary they will bust you in a heartbeat. Dennis in Cary BTW, sitting here at almost 1:00 AM with no A/C waiting for the repair on call to show up. GOD it's hot in the house...... also drinking a cold beer to cool of some. I guess it will be a long night for me.

Nothing new. When I lived in TN for a few years, the THP used to scope out Krystal's for DUI's. For some reason, Drunk drivers were thought to frequent Krystal's while DUI. That reasoning was developed after someone noticed during processing that many DUI's had mustard on their fingernails and craved a bag of burgers b4 being arrested.

Most small bars have a kitchen here and serve what I call bar food. In the City Limits we have had a code change that requires a 50-50% alc. to food revenue. Seems high to me. but two have closed to the new reg.'s. For every beer, food must be purchased. To hard to keep up. Restaurants are less. Old Guard prevales, to not lose their revenue. New sports bar opens and cannot meet the 50-50 beer code 2 Mos. closed. Chili Cheese dog and a 20oz. Beer Lunch special $4.00 could not meet the demands of City Code. 12 weeks gone, Bar Only Now, just to stay open. And this is in a highly traveled route. We Southern's know how to screw people.

I remember going back in the 60's and 70's you got your license at 16 and learned how to drink and drive at 18. Everyone left the bar and jumped into their cars and went to all kinds of food joints. Diners were big on the east coast. If the cops pulled over every drunk driver back in those days there wouldn't be anyone left in town, everyone would be in jail. Things change for a reason and this was a good reason for change. If your at a find dining restaurant or a fast food place and had to much to drink then its you tough luck. Drunk driving is drunk driving, remember they had to drive to the place to get there..............Book umm Daniel....................Bill

It certainly would cause one to think about law, law enforcement methods, or some other legal issues. BUT that is why I posted the line about: But let’s not turn this into a discussion on the law, law enforcement methods, or some other legal issues. It’s the political comments that cause threads to be deleted or locked, and this was about a great opportunity for someone that is getting started, in the vending business, or a entrepreneurial type could end up with a great business and a ton of free press by offering to serve patrons in bars before they drive. That sort of effort gets newspapers all fired up and gives the bar owner and food vendor both a ton of exposure. Thank you

Sorry, Doc. But with all due respect, It's naive to think you can start a topic here and expect everyone to stick to the author's, "rules". It just ain't gonna happen!

The authors rules are moot.....however i was fooled into thinking food would make me sober.Funny story-my designated driver( sober as hell)baited the cops when she went to start her car...let me say I do not condone drunk driving...anyway, the cops surrounded her car and she was sober-everyone else got away.Food or no food. Besides, who wants to enjoy food when they are bombed?????

I still have one of those stickers on my pickup from around 1985.

I'm happy to say, I only drink (good) wine nowadays. Well, other than the odd Mojito. I never get drunk and I can always be relied upon for being a "designated driver". I've spent a lot of time in England. I don't have to tell you how much alcohol THEY consume. However, out in the country where most of my friends lived, whenever we would all would go out to the pubs or have dinner somewhere, they ALWAYS used a cab service. To, and from the pub or restaurant. Driving and drinking in the UK is a VERY SERIOUS offense.

As soon as the cops figure out the bar owners made arrangements with food vendors (because they get no more drunks down at the Krystal's), they will take some of that $128,000 grant money to become food vendors, and set up right next to you. It sounds to me like the sheriff's department needed a cock-and-bull story to shake down the state for some funding.

Besides, who wants to enjoy food when they are bombed????? That reminds me of an old joke I heard, or what I can remember of it anyway. It's probably a little butchered: A couple cops are sitting across the street waiting for the 2am crowd to leave the bars and get in their cars so they can pull them over and give out DUIs. They notice one guy who's in really bad shape. He stumbles out of the door, falls over, gets back up, stumbles over to his car, fumbles with his keys, etc. He eventually gets his door unlocked and gets in his car to leave. The cops eagerly await him to pull out onto the road, then turn on their lights and pull him over. The guy takes the breathalyzer and shockingly the results show he hasn't had one drink all night. The cops ask him how he was in such bad shape, to which he responds "I'm the designated decoy!"

Frankly, drunk drivers need to be arrested wherever they are. If they're on the road, they're a risk to everyone else and they don't care. Book 'em, Danno.

Though I am not saying I enjoy the feeling I have the morning after lol. Most of my friends usually go to Denny's, Taco trucks or a fast food joint after a night of drinks. Anything open. Time does sober you up and that would be an extra half hour to an hour you spend at the bar eating instead of on the road. I guess it's better nothing. I would use this topic along with many other points to pitch to a bar owner. I am trying to find a night spot once a week for now, seeing I am a night owl anyway.

Any cop that sits outside a bar waiting for someone to get in their car and pull away, bag em for DUI is an azzhole, number one for letting them get in the car, number 2, for letting them pull away. If you see someone stumbling towards the car, then they dont get in the car, start it and drive away, nonsense.. Juvenile police tactics, and good for getting someone jammed up big time. Shouldnt be done. Camping out at a drinking spot is bad news, both for the customer and the cop. Dont let the guy or gal in the car, period. You wanna pinch, walk inside and arrest them for drunkenness...

What? Deprive the municipality of a vehicular forfiture, massive fine, bonus? They don't even have to drive, just get behind the wheel with keys. Even if they sleep it off, they're already DUI. Even fooling with them as above can get you arrested either on probable cause or delaying/interfering an officer. Then if they really wanna get nasty, there's plenty of other things they could arrest you for and let you sit in the tank until morning for the arraignment judge and asst. DA to figure it out. This happend to a girlfriend of my daughters after a night of clubbing on Miami Beach. Acting like an idiot got her arrested. It doesn't take much. Unidentified pills in a purse w/o proof of prescription and a license that didn't match other documents is somehow considered resisting arrest just as emphatically proclaiming your innocense, you're creating a disturbance and failing to comply. This sillyness cost her grandmother a couple of grand in attorney's fees, fine, empoundment, and bail. Had she behaved and bought a hot dog from a vending cart, this would have never happened. (There, this post is offically on topic)
