Chinese barbecued duck to be precise. Next to the Ranch 99 Market in Van Nuys, California is a Chinese BBQ Take-out by the name of Sam Woo Bar B Que Restaurant. 6450 Sepulveda Blvd Ste G Van Nuys, CA I believe that they have other locations. I frequent the market but I'd never ventured in to Sam Woo's. I was with my mother and others who didn't think I needed to buy anything. They obviously do not know me. When I entered I noticed a bunch of cheap, ugly, Formica tables filled with people to the right. On the left was a long, glass encased steam table with lots of pans. They were filled with food I'll have nightmares about tonight. Chicken feet, boiled chickens that looked cooked but extremely naked, pig intestine, barbecued pork, pork knuckles (what were those???) and other unidentifiable meats for sale by the pound. Most were in some sort of a sauce. Nothing looked edible... to me. They also had a regular menu for those who were dining in. What caught my attention was not in this steam table. In the back was some sort of a large glass thing with cooked ducks hanging by their necks. I asked the man who had already asked me several times if he could help me how the ducks were sold... and eaten. Whole duck -- $17.95 and a half duck $10.95. Even I know that the whole duck was the better buy, but being the first time I asked for a half duck. Then I was asked if I wanted the head and I answered.... NO, thank you. He put that duck on a wood block and hacked it with a cleaver in to a bunch of little pieces. He put it in a Styrofoam container and then a bag. Inside of that bag when I got home was not only the duck but a bunch of terrific smelling sauce and a container of what I think must be... duck sauce. It was sweet and sour and good. The duck was amazing! Very fatty, very bony and very good! It had a star anise undertone. For me this is an eat at home meal. Very messy and very greasy. I sucked those bones clean! I'll go back for sure! Only duck that was missing was Cold.

There is a Sam Woo in Irvine next to 99 Ranch that has the ducks too. I used to get them from a Chinese BBQ place near me in Long Beach. The first time they gave me the head without asking. I stared at it for a while and it stared back at me. I learned to ask for "no head" when I went back there. The duck was delicious, though. Definitely the way to get it!

:) Did you also roll? Ducks qualify as both protein and fat. I just over did... a lot.
