Dunaway Drugs chili slaw dog

Years ago I work in Ga as aerospace eng. I would take my 6 yr old daughter to the luncheonette counter at Dunaway Drug store (the one in Market Square on Canton Hwy). They had what they called Chili slaw dogs and they were great. the cold slaw contrast with the chili made it a real treat. Was this a cobb county thing or do they serve this type of hot dog at other cafes in GA? Dunaways is no longer in existance so would like to find this treat the next time i head to Atlanta.

The more I learn about these slaw dogs, I wonder... Do they use vinegar based slaw or a sweeter one?
Around here in Michigan, I used the sweet slaw on top of the chili with great results (actually sort of got me hooked on these dogs served with chili and slaw)...
Not sure what version they serve down there in Georgia, but there's been more then plenty of discusions here talking about them...
And Jack, Welcome to Roadfood! We love folks that enjoy a good dog!

They are populan East of Charlotte in NC. The slaw around here is usually mayo based. Around lexington they use BBQ slaw, which has a little BBQ sauce in it.

I think the Dunaway hot dogs had mayo based slaw and it had a bit of a sweet taste to it.

Another area: I used to get slaw dogs in Columbia, SC (don't remember the name of the place.) Also, Super Duper Weenie in CT has them but I don't know if that really counts since they call it a Dixie Dog...

Chili Slaw dogs are great! Both styles of slaw are good. I'm wondering what Chili with cabbage and carrots would taste like...

Slaw Dogs are all over South Carolina. I make them at home using the coleslaw from my Meijer store. Finely chopped, sweet and creamy.

I've never had a hot dog with cole slaw on it. Is the cole slaw served warm or cold prior to putting it on the dog? I would think if its cold, it would kill the heat of the dog.

Let it warm on the counter for 15 min. or so before putting it on the dog. If you take you hot dogs right out of the water, or grill, etc. you won't miss any heat.

A lot of older restaurants around here (Huntsville, AL) serve a slaw dog with a ketsup based type slaw. I make mine at home with finely copped cabbage, ketsup, grated onion and a capful of vinegar. Mix well and enjoy. Makes the best slaw dogs around.

About two hours ago I had my weekly fix of chili slaw dogs with extra
onion and Texas Pete hot sauce. Can't think of anything better to chase the dreary day away! That and a big ole Pepsi really hit the spot and the Hot Dog King is only 3 blocks away here in Newport News. It's probably the best dog place anywhere near here....been throwing back those dogs since 1972! Barney

My ex-inlaws were from Charleston, WVA, and when we would visit, we would always stop at DQ on the way and get a slaw dog {chili, onions, mustard and slaw}. It is MUCH better than it sounds. YUM!!

The other day at work {bar/restaurant}, our employee meal was hot dogs, and as a side the sous chef had made a vinegar based cole slaw. I thought, what the hay, and put it on the dog. It was very good, reminisent of sauerkraut.

The Varsity in Atlanta serves a slaw dog, chile slaw dog and chile, cheese slaw dog - try www.thevarsity.com and checkout the menu. Long considered an Atlanta institution, it does have it's detractors. Sort under Forums for the Varsity and you'll see alot of different opinions.

Talking about ketchup-based coleslaw, has onyone ever tried the rendition served atop the frankfurters at Payne's, Scottsboro, Alabama?

I just made a post in the hot dog cheese thread about my sweety puting sourkrout on her chili dog. I bet I can't switch her to slaw. It sounds good to me though.

Try some sourkrought sometime. It's good to. Does anyone sell a Krought Chili Dog?
