East Newark, NJ - Tops Diner

Found this easily from the Comfort Suites where we stayed in East Newark.  The menu here is extensive. Almost 20 pages long, well over 100 items.  More gourmet food than diner food but it runs the gamut from cheap to moderate prices. I had a wedge salad that really was like half a head of lettuce. I also had chicken soup that was outstanding, like your mom would make. My wife had the best grilled shrimp she has ever eaten. They have seafood, steaks, Italian, a zillion breakfast items all day, tons of cakes and cheesecakes all made fresh, we drooled looking at them on display, and 8 kinds of milkshakes.  The food is superb! Try it when you are in Newark.  It's in a very depressed area of vacant warehouses and mills with homeless folks living under a bridge nearby with lots of graffiti everywhere.  However, this place is amazing and the food is top-notch.

This place is outstanding. Consistently rated as one of the top 3 diners in NJ. great value and lines can be long but the wait is worth it. Not a bad neighborhood. It is safe.

I agree, even in NJ with 1000's of diners to choose from, Tops stands out.

BTW, just about a two minute drive from there, in Harrison, is the wonderful Pechter's Bakery Outlet. Prices and décor from the 1950's. It's a large commercial bakery, but I'll take their rye bread over any artisan Rye I've found, and at about 1/4 the price.

Their website has no info, but here's Yelp:
