it was just me and my wife, this past weekend. I spent most of the time in a church, as I am cantor and choir conductor - there was much to do. By the time Sunday afternoon rolled around, I was bushed, plus the weather in DC, while sunny, was cold and windy. We stayed in, and I made a clam linguine that also has bacon, black olives and capers in it. I made way too much, so we'll be eating it today, tomorrow and probably Wednesday too. Good thing we like this meal! I thought about doing salmon cakes as a brunch dish, but was too tired, and lazy - I suppose, to prep and cook anything until about 5pm. So, linguine it was - and it was good!

Ivyhouse: Your memory of your grandmother having your grandfather take you out for a while so that you would not see the chickens being killed was funny because my "chickens being killed" experiences were far different. My grandfather would announce that he was going out to get a couple of chickens for dinner. My sister and I would rush upstairs and look out a bedroom window which overlooked the vegetable garden and a small chicken coop and chicken yard. We would sit there and watch as he chopped the heads off two chickens and make a bet on which one of the "jumping wonders" would drop dead first. However, we wanted no part of watching my grandmother clean them and pluck the feathers. That part we did not like!

Dobre deyn fellow Ukies!! We basically do the same thing, but we have it at around 10am after mass. We usually have 5-6 different kinds of kovbasa, but one needs to be unsmoked, everything's cold, and have homemade butter and cheese, but you have to eat one of everything that was blessed by Monsignior first. (no pierogies, that's Christmas eve with wild mushroom gravy). We used to go to St. Johns in South Side Pittsburgh, but now I'm in Ambridge. One thing I missed were the salt sticks at the bakery where the pool hall on Carson St is now. When was a kid, I thought the shredded horseradish was pizza cheese, took a big handful and... learned my lesson!!!! A late Hrystos Voskrese!
