Here's an interesting post from JB-ME from the "Sandwiches" folder:
Long time reader but first time poster to RF. One of my family traditions involves grinders. When I was a little girl my family lived near Springfield, MA, but an aunt, uncle, and grandma lived in Westerly, RI, about a 2-hr trip each way. On the way home from visiting, dad would stop at a mom and pop grocery and buy grinders and a big bag of State Line potato chips for an easy supper, when we got home. Everyone enjoyed this--especially mom, since it meant no dishes to wash. Later, after living in Texas and a number of other states--no grinders!--we found ourselves back in MA and dad tried to find a new source for grinders. The mom and pop had long since gone out of business. He asked around and found D'elia's in Norwich, CT, which is near New London in the southeast part of CT. This was circa 1967, dad and mom are now gone, but the family tradition survives. Most recently a niece, nephew, and grandniece came up to Maine, where I now live, and stopped at D'elia's and got cold salami grinders and put them in an ice chest. Yum. These are the same type that I grew up on. On trips south to visit family in southern NJ, I have done the same thing. Bought grinders at D'elia's. They are what I would call a hole-in-the-wall store front, where they bake their own bread. That is what makes a great grinder. They have lots of different meats to choose from, but the basic cold grinder includes the meat, finely shredded lettuce, thinly sliced tomato and provolone, s&p, and is sprinkled with oil. A wonderful place! Until a few years ago and a younger generation of family took over, two older ladies--one the owner--would always be there and recognize me, though my stops were infrequent. When you order a lot at once, you get remembered. Anyway, this place is highly recommended by me. A few years ago I remember doing an online search and found that another branch of the family had a place in CA, too. Apparently part of the family went west many years ago. Don't know what that D'elia's is like.

I've never heard of this place, nor do I remember ever stopping in Norwich for food, but may I add it to the list if time permits?  It's got 5 stars on Yelp...  Chris

We've got quite the agenda already. Was hoping to get to Ford's sometime between 5 and 6 pm.
Perhaps we can scrap Harry's Drive In and check out D'elia's if time permits.

On an aside... there are so many posters  from CT, MA and even RI that post, and post and post and post and keep on posting....but do not attend any roadfood events, I'm suprised we haven't heard from you- don't make me call you out!

I didn't know if D'Elia's was too far out of the way.  No biggie, we can stick to the original plan -- and let's not get hasty and nix Harry's off the cuff...they have one of my favorite cheeseburgers!    Chris

Chris, D'Elia's is not terribly far out of the way- in fact Sandra works in Norwich, I'm just thinking from a "time persepective" , keep in mind there will likely be a wait at Kitchen Little in Mystic, I'm not sure they take reservations,  that in itself could put us behind schedule, in addition, after planning all of this, I found out I have an unveiling to go to on Long Island the next day, so we're going to leave Saturday (after Ford's Lobster) and stay overnight in Stamford CT to get us a head start the following day.

Kitchen Little moved down to the marina. See their website for directions from old location to current.

Wow! I am getting quoted. Just a note. D'elia's doesn't have a lot of parking--just parallel on the street in front of the store. Nor is it an eat-in type of place, though there are a few booths. They do mostly takeout. If you go there, have someone purchase the grinders (maybe two large for the current list), and have the sandwich makers cut them into enough servings to share, before they wrap them up. They normally cut a large grinder in half anyway. There are parks in the area, if the weather is good, or you could eat them anywhere else you stop. They sell soda, chips, and bread, too.

Thanks freeroses

I just updated the location for Kitchen Little(I've been to the new location, but didn't have the exact address) Google still has the old location listed.

Only 4 days away.....

I spoke with Paulde this weekend. He will  be unable to join as at Kitchen Little but will join us at our 2nd stop, Kamp Dogs

We had an interesting discussion about "posters" here from the CT, RI and MA area that post, and post and post and post (apparently they can't be too busy because they just keep on posting) yet they've been silent on this thread.. Don't be a "poster" Be a Roadfooder and join us!

Janet and I love Kamp Dog.  We stopped there in early July on our way to RI.  The mini cheeseburgers are not to be missed.  Enjoy the food tour.  Wish we could be up there for the food-festivities.

Sounds good.   We get there a couple times per year. ....  Love the J-cakes at Jigger's.  That would make a good meet-up spot.

Jigger's is a fairly short drive ... - maybe 12 to 15 minutes from where we stay near Wickford when we're up there.   We don't have our next trip scheduled yet, but hoping to get up there some time during the winter.

How did the CT RF day go? Any surprises--good or bad? Photos?

Thanks for inquiring JB-ME
It was a very long, ambitious but delicious day. There were certainly no weak links and Ayersian took plenty of photos- Since they weren't able to join us for our last meal at Ford's Lobster, that's only place where no photos were taken.

Starting at 9am at Kitchen Little, we concluded our last meal at Ford's Lobster at around 7:30pm. I was the only "constant" with others joining us during different points of the day including Sandra, Yvel, Bethgrd, Karilyn Ayersian, Waltpiii, Paulde, Kim and TntinCT. My one really big surprise was Kamp Dog, the" Dynamite Dog" was much better than I anticipated... Buttonwood Farms had solid ice cream, the Pumpkin was fine the Graham Cracker was even better, although Sandra and I believe Salem Valley Farms is a slight notch above.
The evening culminated for me with a Lobster Bomb (twice the lobster of a roll) at Ford's Lobster in a bread bowl, with Lobster bisque ladled on top....WOW!

The only place we couldn't make it due to lack of time was D'Elias althought Paulde and daughter Kimberly did get there prior to meeting us at Harry's

I believe all of us agree that it was fun day and we all had a great time
