Eastern Market fire

Eastern Market, located in Capital Hill neighborhood of DC, had a three-alarm fire early Monday morning that has caused 20 million dollars in damage. Home to butchers, bakers, fishmongers, flower shops, a delicatessen, the Market Lunch and more, Eastern Market has been a cornerstone for locals to buy foods and goods for years. The fire gutted the inside of the south hall and destroyed the roof, but the structure is solid according to the fire department.
Mayer Fenty has already gone on record that the city will rebuild the historic landmark and Rep. Eleanor Holmes has stated that she will ask Congress for monies as well. Eastern Market is on the registry of National Historic Landmarks and has been in continuous operation since 1873.

City residents expect to wait at least nine months before the south hall reopens. In the meantime, the outdoor flea market and farmers market will remain open beginning as early as this weekend.

Let's all hope that the city doesn't change its mind to save this historic building and unique food market.
