Ed had a couple rough last years, he deserves some rest and peace now.

    Farewell.

I've watched Ed McMahon on television for almost fifty years. It's hard to believe that he's gone. Goodbye, old friend.

Always felt that Ed was one of the most overpaid, under-talented "stars" in Hollywood. Maybe Bob Saget will take his place.

sudie, you are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but don't you think that this is an inappropriate place to make negative comments about Mr. McMahon? After all, this thread was started as a tribute to the man, not as a place to tear him down.

I was surprised to as sudie is an otherwise positive poster.

Without Ed the Tonight Show would've had a completely different look and feel.  The working relationship between him and Johnny was very symbiotic.

                  Hello All,
Ed was a joy to watch with Johnny Carson.  Their
chemistry entertained, educated and simply gave
                  my soul such delight.
Ed was one mate that Johnny didn't divorce.
His military service should not be ignored.
I literally grew up  from 5 or 6 years old watching
the Tonight Show....Ed was like a wonderful,
worldly uncle that I laughed with.
                  I will miss him.
                  Take Care,
                  Fieldthistle

My memories of Ed go back even further than the Tonight Show. He was the announcer on "Who Do You Trust?" in the early '60s, the show on which Johnny Carson labored as a ( gasp! ) game show host.

NPR re-played a 1988 interview with Ed in which he was asked how he'd like to be remembered.

                      Paraphrasing:

"I'd like them to remeber me as a good broadcaster, and a great Marine."

His time in the Marines left a life long imprint on him and he always thought of himself as a Marine first, and in entertainment second.

I remember Who do you trust as well.

Also remember Ed was one of the hosts of the radio program Monitor that ran on weekends on the old NBC Radio Network for most of the '60s. He had to give up that gig when Johnny moved the Tonight Show to Hollywood.
