Where do you think they make the very best egg salad sandwiches? I remember a great egg salad sandwich I used to get at the Squirrel Cage in Charlotte Amalie.

When I was young, we had a department store called Gimbel and Schusters downtown. It was a special event to go shopping and then have lunch in their retaurant. They had wonderful egg salad.Same with a local restaurant named Heinemans. As of today, the best egg salad I can get now is at a Jewish deli named Benjis.

I usually just make egg salad at home. When I have had it out, it's always so dry and bland. Not enough mayo or seasoning. When I make it I use mayonnaise, dijon mustard, finely chopped onion and celery, pepper, salt, a bit or Worscestershire sauce, and sometimes a pinch of curry powder. Works great as a Deviled Egg stuffing too!

I was thinking along the same lines

The old Shillitos in Downtown Cincinnati, we ate there when we would go to the Bob Braun Show or Shopping downtown.

The best egg salad I've had was in Venice, CA at a place called Fanny's. I swear they put schmaltz in it. It was so good! I always hadt it on rye bread, accompanied by a Dr. Brown's Cream Soda. It was a giant sandwich which was available in half portions. All the waitresses were ancient, and wore pink and white uniforms, sort of like the servers at Ann Sather.

I love egg salad; I've had great ones at the Olde Sandwich & Ice Cream Shoppe (a chain perhaps?) in Summerville SC--had tons of crispy bacon on it, yum, and at Cribb's Sandwich Shop in Lexington SC--on a croissant. That'll make you cry.

The Pot of Gold gift shop in High Springs Fl used to make the best egg and chicken salad sandwichs I ever put in my mouth. I think they just recently changed ownership and expanded the deli.

My favorite egg salad sandwich was at a drug store named McLeister's in Barrington, IL. The egg was chopped very fine and mixed with lots of mayo. They are now called the Bread Basket but last time I was there (20 years ago) the egg salad tasted the same as when I was a child (50-60 years ago). Johnny Rocket's has an excellent egg salad now. My all-time favorite kind of sandwich.

They each have there own thing and individual stores may vary some, but quick grab and go places for sandwichs, coffee and groceries and such. My mom, bless her, made an outstanding egg salad sandwich- buttered the bread, slathered the egg salad on the bread and topped it with sliced pimento stuffed green olives. Of course, for taking to school, it was wrapped in about 3 feet or more of wax paper. Always enough to cover the desk or table.
Nowadays, my own egg salad sandwich is the only one I really like- chopped egg, mayo, dijon or creole mustard and a dash of A1 topped wih olives, don't you know!

In the Armory Square neighborhood of Syracuse, NY, the Blue Tusk used to make a very good egg salad. I liked it on rye. Unfortunately, thay've changed their menu and gotten rid of most of their deli food, so I don't know if they even serve it anymore...which is a shame. When I was teaching in that area, Fridays during lent, meant either a fish sandwich platter at Doug's Fish Fry in Skaneateles or an Egg Salad sandwich with a side of mac and cheese at the Blue Tusk.

The best egg salad is made at home. Chopped or grated hard boiled eggs, real mayo (Hellman’s is best), a bit of grated onion or celery, but not too much, and salt and white pepper.

Spread it on soft white or a good whole wheat bread. Lettuce and tomato are optional.

Egg salad like tuna salad is one of the things I only eat at home. I prefer my eggs very finely chopped/mashed almost like the filling for deviled eggs. I add various things depending on my mood/pantry, chopped onions, hotpeppers, dried tomatos etc.
When I first got married my wife (not a cook by ant stretch of the imagination) was making me egg salad for lunch and decided to short cut the process by using the blender. Eggs, onion and mayo all went in and.... soup came out! 3dzn boiled and mashed eggs later we had enough eggsalad to feed the neighborhood!

Isn't the topic "Where do you think they make the very best egg salad sandwiches?"

"Where do you think they make," I think, infers that another entity (probably a restaurant), and not oneself, is making the Egg Salad.

If one asks, "who makes the best buffalo wings in DC?" I could easily, and rightfully so, answer, "me." However, I don't think that will help most travelers, unless you actually wanted to come over to my house on wing night. Which, any roadfood.comer is welcome , but I'm not sure that would've been the answer you were looking for.

I've never tried egg salad in restaurants because they so often put onions or relish in that I don't like. But the supplier for our work sandwiches (you know, those triangle things) actually makes an excellent egg salad with bacon. Normally though I just like to make it at home, my way.

I fully agree with this. I don't care what someone prepares in their home and I don't care for pictures of home cooking either.

I want information on restaurants where I will be able to go to if I want. I love the food photos that are taken in restaurants and I appreciate the effort that so many Roadfooders take to do this. They show what I can expect if I do choose to go to a certain restaurant.

                                                  Hi,
Looking at the above replies..I agree,we want to know about egg salad bought..I agree most of us would prefer our own egg salad, tuna salad,etc...recipees vary so much....But if we order it out....I'd say a likely place would be a small mom & pop place, for a quick lunch...Around New Jersey a safe place would be one of our diners. It's a great diner lunch and most diners make excellent comfort food. So I'd vote for a good diner!

Homemade is the best, especially mine.

I know how much ingredients to add and in what order to apply it. I am apprehensive about eggs and tuna made by other folks.

Where their hands clean? How long was the mayo left out? Are the eggs cooked thoroughly? I really think these things. A little odd, I know!

Can you verify that the egg salad at that little place on Fifth Avenue near the Flatiron Building in Manhattan is still fantastic? A really small space, major lunch business for the area, but the egg salad and tuna salad were (and I hope still are) absolutely tops...it (the egg salad) used to get write-ups all the time in the New York press.

Yes that old ratty place is still there amidst the new $3,000,000 one bedroom room condos being built. Eisenbergs it is, and they specialize in tuna salad also. I've never had egg salad there (don't really like egg salad) but, in your honor, I will check it out tomorrow. My office is one short block south of it.
