Eggnog - What's your favorite?

In the Cincinnati area:

TRAUTH Dairy EGGNOG

It is thick and creamy, awesome flavor, just the right hint of spices.  Works great with a spiced rum to make it more adultish.

I have been through 1+ gallon of the stuff since Turkey Day.  WOW has it played hell on my sugar levels though.  Guess that is why insulin injections were developed.

Best egg nog I've ever tasted was made in Amish country at the now defunct Chrome Dairy in Oxford, Pennsylvania.  Delicious beyond belief.  All-natural, thick, creamy, perfectly flavored, and luxurious.  My 2nd choice now:  Southern Comfort or Organic Valley, probably a tie.  A friend in Hesperia, CA swears by Broguiere's.

    Home made!

In California Broguiere's is indeed the best.  All that is lacking is the booze.  They also make the best chocolate milk I've ever had.

    Here's my recipe:

My Very Own Eggnog Recipe by Me:

    12 eggs, separated
    1 cup sugar
    1 quart whole milk
    1 quart half & half
    1 pint whipping cream
    1 pint brandy
    ½ cup rum
    nutmeg

Beat egg yolks until thick and lemony (light yellow!) colored, adding the sugar gradually.  Make sure that all of the sugar is dissolved before proceding to the next step.

Beat in brandy and rum.  Add milks and cream slowly stirring constantly.

Put in to punch bowl if you have one.

Whip egg whites until stiff.  Fold into eggnog.  Some of it floats on the top.

    Grate nutmeg over the top.

    Chill

    Drink

    Try to walk

The best that I've ever had dates back to the 60's to mid 70's when a local dairy/drive in chain named Farm Stores carried their own egg nog. The place is still around, but that special egg nog that they used to bottle in their returnable 1/2 gallon jugs with the pleated, paper cap is long gone. This stuff was so thick sometimes that it sort of slowly "glugged" into a cup. For some reason, the adult's egg nog always got a lot thinner and they wouln't let you take a sip of theirs.

Here in NE PA and the southern tier of NY, it's Purity Dairy. Mrs Mosca once made me drive to Ithaca (2 hrs) to get some.

when I lived in Connecticut Hood golden egg nog was THE best.
they have Hood down here but only flavored; vanilla, pumpkin, but not golden.
the Publix brand gets better the more rum you add.

I've heard good things about Hood egg nog.  I've also heard good things from the high desert about Alta Dena egg nog.  We're really starved for great egg nog around here (Mayfield's would gag a maggot).  I may just have to make a batch using Mar52's recipe.

mayor al:  It's a suprisingly small world.  I was astonished to learn Curbside Grill grew up in a neighboring subdivision just across the highway from me.  You never know!

I only buy one quart of eggnog per year. For years, it's been Chipwich; its ingredients list are closer to homemade than any other commercial brand I've seen (including a few organic brands). I haven't seen it yet this year, but Trader Joe's is selling eggnog under their own label which has a similar ingredients list.

Farmland Dairies made Chipwich Egg Nog. Brand was licensed from Nestle, which killed off the Chipwich Ice Cream brand. Farmland customer Pathmark always carried it.

    Jabber,
Have you seen any Queensboro Farm Products Egg Nog up your way?
For years, they made it in Canastota and it came in a generic container with no brand name on it. It only had Canastota, NY listed on the side of the container. Can't find it in the NYC metro area anymore, unless it is now all foodservice business.

Around here (Tucson) it's Shamrock Farms and it's pretty good, but better with a shot of brandy and a grating of fresh nutmeg.   In SF, I imagine it would be Berkeley Farms ("Farms?  In Berkeley?"--that's a well known commercial  )

I make my own, the recipe comes from the Williamsburg cookbook. It's so thick it tastes like whipped cream.

Today, I tried it from Cooper's Hilltop Farm in Rochdale, Mass. Hilltop is a small on farm dairy. The store is about the size of a large bedroom, and a similar sized processing room opens into it. Nothing fancy. They still sell milk in returnable glass bottles. The eggnog is superior to store eggnog, and has sugar instead of HFCS (but it does have corn syrup). I saw a NY and a CT plate in the lot out of a total of only 4 cars. They do have a following.

I still think that Pearson's Elmhurst Dairy in Millbury Mass is the very best though. Pearson's has an even smaller on farm store than Cooper's. Although both have secret formulas (according to the local paper), I suspect that the Pearson product is made with more cream and less milk. The Cooper product, therefore, may be better for you, but when we are talking eggnog, I doubt that any eggnog is "good" for you.

A local liquor store, Maggio's, makes some wonderful stuff, but it's for adults only! Fortunately for the waistline I used to have, it's sold seasonally only; we buy one or two gallons a year.
