Ellen's Daytona/JAX ... DAY 2, Stinky Dog, etc Mon, 11/10/08 4:19 PM (permalink)
Flew down to JAX (Nov.1-3)for "Bluemaxx" Roadfood Daytona meat-up
Sun. Nov. 2nd (the "day after" our wonderful Brickyard meat-up)
DARK clouds, SOTRMY day in DAYTONA BEACH SHORES

Looks like my plans for laying out in the sun have been squandered.
I settled for putting my feet in the ocean, & taking swim in the pool
I think it's crazy they let cars drive on this narrow beach!

Daytona Beach Shores, view looking north from my Ocean Court Motel

I was surprised to see that a lifeguard appeared around 10 am

He was the only lifeguard I could see in either direction, and looks like he was in for an easy day.... as I only saw one person in the water boogie-boarding..... still, he's gotta watch that one life..

11 am, time to drive out for LUNCH... went to LA FIESTA, on the rec. of fellow Roadfooder buddy JOHN A.
I had mentioned I was thinking about Mexican food for today.
LA FIESTA, Port Orange.. (Daytona Beach area)

This place was just what the kind of joint I was looking for.
The CHIPS were nice and HOT and fresh, just how I like them!
Great dipping sauces, too

Wish we had places like this in my area.
Had the sampler APPETIZER platter to start...this is a lousy pic
Those things that look like chicken wings are actually good cheese poppers. Then there was smoked chicken taquitos, chicken nachos, and some real good GUACOMOLE.I love when places offer an app.sampler

CHEESE ENCHILADA (very tasty) and my BEEF TACO (just standard; nothing like those cheap fried tacos (with melted cheese), that I get in L.A. area!!)

Next up was BOOTH'S BOWERY for buffalo wings, also in Port Orange.

I grabbed a few bumper stickers from the Booth's Bowery take-out/convenience store (which was to the right of the restaurant)
Also these homemade (by "Peggy") cupcakes...they were too sweet for my tastes. Note the NJ made Boylan's soda! Cool!

I ordered the WINGS with HOT GARLIC sauce...well done, crispy..
Note the BOTTLES of HOT SAUCE I bought. Well, that would be the LAST I SAW of them, as they were determined a threat to national security and ended up getting CONFISCATED at the JAX airport the next day!!

(forgot I had those "liquids" in my suitcase)....I took my $13.00 loss on them. (as opposed to taking my suitcase back down to the US Airways ticket counter and paying another $25.00 to check the bag)
(Plus, I had a fairly tight connection in Charlotte, and felt like carrying on)...

Well, at LEAST I got to try that HOT GARLIC sauce on the wings I ordered... My 2nd time there; last time was in June.
Someone once said in another post that these were SMALL wings!
Not in MY opinion... (I prefer them smaller, anyway, though)
KUDOS go out to WENDY who works in the BOOTH'S BOWERY take-out/& convenience store, as her attitude and personality really SPARKLE! I noticed the way she treated the customers coming in and out of there while I was waiting for my wings. She made good small talk.
(as in "Did the rain stop for now?!?")

Next, I decided to squeeze in a visit to MARIA BONITA's, (in Daytona) the Mexican Restaurant I had originally been thinking of going to before JOHN A told me to try La Fiesta.

I'm too STUFFED for a sit down dinner, so I decided to take out some CHIPS and SALSA (to do a taste comparison) and a BEEF ENCHILADA

CHIPS and SALSA were great(just like La Fiesta), Beef Enchilada was just "okay", IMO, not extra special.

Next, I head into downtown DAYTONA for a STINKY DOG, cause Miami Don clued me into this place. He had just been there the day before.
I love the good SIGNAGE; it's on a side street, and often places miss out on extra business by not having a little directory sign

Note the art show booths in the background. As it turned out, I got lucky, as it turns out that Stinky's is NORMALLY CLOSED SUNDAYS, but DUE to this ART SHOW, they decided to open shop. (Plus, word must've got around that Ellen was coming to town! And she means business!)

My STINKY DOG with the excellent meat sauce on the side

The hot dog brand is from Michigan. It's all beef, but I found it too mild for my tastes..(too watery and boring, IMO)
The way my ears heard it, it is a "KENT'S" brand hot dog, but the way Miami Don heard it, it's a "HENT'S" brand.
Maybe a Michigan Roadfooder, or JOHN FOX, our resident hot dog guru, can sort this one out.
STINKY DOGS, Daytona Beach

Please come back for my DAY 3, GRAND FINALE..
where you will read about a BURGER find that RIVALS the BRICKYARD!!!!

Daytona is always nice. Daytona Beach was one of the first sites of the NASCAR race on the beach. They don't do that any more. Daytona looked deserted? Food looks very good

Ellen, all that in one day? Way to go!

Look how choppy the water in the pool is. Forget the ocean, I'd be afraid of the pool.

Those enchiladas look great, but that taco is definitely lacking.

I want those wings! I love wings!

Sorry about the hot sauce. What a bummer!

I think all that liquid ban stuff is going to be lifted soon. Still a bummer!

Man, did I miss out on Stinky's. I've actually never heard of it before MiamiDon's post and now Ellen's. I will be sure to go to Stinky's next time I'm up there. Where is it?

(LOL) Yeah, it was'nt a very exciting looking hot dog...
                and very plain tasting..
but that meat sauce on the side was very juicy and exciting

Good eye noticing that choppy water in the pool!
(and when I started swimming towards the deep end, the "current" somehow kept pushing me back!)It kept things exciting...
And that nicely heated pool felt so good with the chill in the air!!

Yes, I had a busy afternoon, foodwise... and it was'nt quite over for me yet. After Stinky Dogs I drove over in the rain to the VOLUSIA MALL to WALK off some of my lunches.
I was getting thirsty, so I thought that was a good enough excuse to have a KRYSTAL BURGER along with my soda

The VERDICT on the Krystal Burger: It was definitely more juicier, (like White Castle's), than I remembered it being! Makes me wonder if they hired a former White Castle guy to teach them a few tricks!

And while at the mall, I could'nt resist a piece of FRIED CHICKEN and a buttery roll from the PICADILLY Cafeteria, cause it looked good! (and it was). And I like the comfy booths and atmosphere .
I helped the mall close their doors at 6 pm.

I figured I put in a full day already, foodwise, (and then some!!)so I retreated back to my motel room to watch the news, etc., and
took another POWERWALK outside in the lousy weather

Ellen - We have two Krystal's in Daytona. They are not bad and they are very accomodating. They try to keep the place clean, they bring the food to you if you want, etc. Still, I like White Castle more.

The beach pictures were beautiful. Thanks. Lots of people love the fact they can drive on the beach. Lots don't. Has been a debate for a long time. They have had some very serious accidents over the years.

Ellen, your reports are always excellent and I marvel at how you can pack in so much in one day. This report brings back great memories for me as my grandparents lived in Palm Coast when it first opened (I guess there's bridge across the intracoastal waterway from Palm Coast to A1A, I was confused when you wrote in your 1st report about the park "between Palm Coast and Flagler Beach"). I often went to Daytona as a kid, and I remember the Picadilly Cafeteria and Volusia Mall - first place I ever saw Chik-fil-A.

Some places (not really roadfood) my grandparents took me to were Julian's, Aunt Catfish, and Picadilly. The white sand of Daytona looked SO much better to me than the brown sand of Flagler Beach.

Thanks for the great memories and great report. I look forward to the rest of it.

I spotted a Krystal on International Speedway Boulevard close to the La Quinta where I stayed, but it wasn't open on Sunday morning when I left. Is that the one you went to?

That was the one! It's located right by the mall, which was my next stop.

                              Hi Chuck!
So glad to hear you appreciate my beach pics. I rarely get any comments from anyone on them. I figure they might be an interference to some, who are anxious to get to the food pics.
But because YOU like them, that's enough for me to continue !

Interesting that the "driving on beach" has been a big debate.
I'd be afraid to lie down on the beach, cause I might get a tire going right over my neck!

Something to be said for suntanning right on those motel lounge chairs. (with the beach view, but no accident risks!)
Personally, I think beaches should be for walking and jogging...
to enjoy the open air... I don't think it's necessary for anyone to drive on the beach, unless they are lifeguards , etc..

p.s. No report of mine is successful unless I hear from YOU, Chuck!
Thanks again for coming thru, yet again!

In other words, LESS on Daytona in my DAY 3.
I think we've all seen too much of Daytona already; time to get out of town and start heading up north back to JAX!

so your grandparents were "Palm Coast" pioneers, huh?
I was looking at pics in one of the bookstores about that place finally becoming an official city.

I noticed the sand in St. Augustine was hard and dark, (like Flaglers?) during my pit stop there on the way back to JAX..

please come back for my DAY 3 !

That was the one! It's located right by the mall, which was my next stop.

That's the one I went to as well. Turns out that my buddies who were also staying at the La Quinta saw me there as they drove by and made fun of me for not going to dinner with them. But the 10 Krystal burgers I had were awesome....in my room....alone.....away from everyone! I even got a "I LOVE KRYSTAL" sticker which I apln on puttong on the race car!

No, the nearest Krystal is in the Orlando area, a couple of hundred miles away.

Actually, there IS ONE Krystal that I know of in South Florida; appears to be the only one!!!
it's on W. Sunrise Blvd. (east of 95) in Fort Lauderdale...right in front of the Winn Dixie.

Been there a few times, and it hits the spot!
(I did a double take when I ordered at the counter there, and the guy serving me had long, fake eyelashes and ladies earrings and make up)... He was like a taller version of a Flip Wilson. I was like "okaaaay", as I giggled a little to myself... (it just catches you by surprise!)
it was nice to see they don't discrimate on the hiring ..

Sounds like YOU were the lucky one, Rich!!!
I just could envision you now in a Krystal TV commercial...
"here's Bluemaxx downing his 10 Krystals after a heated up race...
now he's away from the ROARING CHEERS of the crowd......
just him and his Krystals and a comfortable La Quinta mattress".

LMAO Ellen...but only one thing would be different....it was a Quality Inn mattress and it was covered in Krystal wrappers, french fries and Coke stains everywhere. Now you've got me really cracking up....too funny envisioning that!

You're right! You know Fort Liquordale (as it was known back in the day) better than I do. I must have messed up when I used the store locator at http://www.krystal.com/storelocator/

                                                This time it gave me:

                                                Krystal
                                                901 W Sunrise Blvd
