How long has it been since you sucked nectar from a honeysuckle? Ever smelled a wild pink honeysuckle bush?

Since I was a kid. Can't smell them either. Dh can't breath around them so he kills the plants when he sees them about to grow here.

About 40 years - I, too, hadn't thought of that in a very long time. I've never seen a pink one

Gosh, it's been years. I remember my friends and I used to believe that once we ran away from home (not that we ever did, or ever had anything to run away from. Our home lives were pretty idyllic but it was fun to plan a Huck Finn-like existence) we could survive on honey suckle nectar and blackberries. We weren't too bright back then. I hadn't thought of that in years. Thanks for bringing back some memories.

Never. I'm guessing honeysuckle isn't hardy in the North and this is a Southern thing? We had a street in our subdivision named Honeysuckle Road, but I don't recall any honeysuckle shrubs.

Honeysuckles are ubiquitous in the south and particularly in Tennessee. They are blooming now and each morning, the aroma is wonderful. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

We had honeysuckle in our back yard in New Jersey and now some in our backyard in Virginia. I haven't sucked any for a while but maybe I will once they bloom.

Since so few are familiar with the pink variety, here are a few hints on where to find them. Unlike the yellow variety that grows on a vine, the pink ones are bush-form. Look for them around creeks & streams, near the edge of swamps & bottoms. They have a wonderful smell. If you find a bush, cut a few branches to bring inside & delight in the aroma. Hybrids are sold at nurseries and are often found in yards with azaleas. I have seen the "tame" ones in a yellowish-orange color, too.

I have a crimson honeyseckle vine mixed in with the wisteria and jasmine that cover the arbor/tunnel over our front walk. I delightedly plucked the first couple blooms to savor the sweetness a week or so ago

Hi MandalayVA, I grew up in central NJ (Flemington/Raeville) area, which was quite rural in the late '50's-'60) when I eventually left home. Anyway, I clearly remember honeysuckle "vines" and the sweet nectar when you could pull out the pistal (?) and get a tiny sweet drip. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeysuckle Needless to say, these are memories, only of a wonderful childhood. I believe most of our chokecherry trees, were in the same rows, along those old country lanes...... and in memories, past.
