The roll should be buttered and grilled, one of those NE style flat sided split top rolls.
Not being from New England, the clam roll I'll always remember is the one from HOJO's.

Yepper, that's it. A split roll buttered and grilled and filled with fried whole belly clams. Not a terribly exciting sandwich. I prefer a box of fried clams from the Clam Box in Ipswich, with french fries and lots and lots of their tartar sauce for dunking!

A clam roll, like a hamburger comes in different quality levels. Most are just fried clams on a hotdog roll (maybe grilled). If the clams are good, the roll is usually good. I would like to see one made like a N.O. Oyster Po Boy, on a special roll. At what they charge for a clam roll today, they could, IMO, spring for a better roll.
