Remember when cans of "pork 'n beans" had that one little piece of meat with a hunk of fat attached?  That was side pork, wasn't it?

I always thought of it more as a flavoring ingredient than something to eat by itself.  It seems around here it's usually thicker than thick bacon, maybe twice as thick.

We have the Strawberry Festival in Poteet,TX, the Peanut Festival in Floresville, the Luling Watermelon Thump, not that far from Lockhart and all its great bbq,  and also Stockdale south of Seguin has a watermelon festival too.
Crystal City has a spinach festival. In fact they have a statue of Popeye the Sailor in town.
New Braunfels being a german town up the road from San Antonio has Wurstfest in the fall. We never went to it .My parents didn't care for crowds. And too even though my dad was german, he was from Milwaukee and Bavarian, and considered  some of the people around here as a bunch of Platzdeutch speaking Rhinelanders, so that might have also
been why we didn't go .

Have you ever been to Howell and had the great misfortune to talk to someone about melons? Those people are NUTS! They are not cantaloupe. They are not muskemelon. They're "Howell Melons", and people there get really irate if you dare to tell them any different.

Me, I'm allergic to them no matter what you call them, so I don't go. I have been to the Cherry Festival on several occasions, though. And if the Grand Rapids Summer Beer Fest (http://www.grandrapidsbeerfest.com/) counts, I do that one almost every year as well. And sometimes the Winter Beer Festival, even though it's spitting distance from my house, I'm not a fan of cold. http://www.mibeer.com/winter-festival

Of course there's the annual Bratwurst Festival in Bucyrus, Ohio -- The Bratwurst Capital of America. The Pumpkin Festival each fall in Circleville, Ohio, and the Tomato Festival in Reynoldsburg, Ohio -- Birthplace of the Tomato. Port Clinton, Ohio has the Walleye Festival, and one cannot leave out the Millersport, Ohio Sweet Corn Festival.

Have I mentioned the Prune Festival in Yuba City, California?  I've been twice and once while there, I  drove further  to Vacaville for their onion festival.

I enjoy the excitement in the air.
