Fall Tour in Milwaukee, Saturday, October 20, 2012

The last time I was at Great Lakes Distillery they had Bolzano salami for sale in case anyone would care to try artisan meats. They had other unique Wisconsin products.
Oh and I'd be fine with car pooling; either as a driver or as a passenger.

Well, my parking lot at my building is safe and free and there is lots of room. I'm basically at the start of KK, so we're right there. I'm in St. Francis on Lake Drive.
Just throwing that out there.

Thanks!  I'll keep it in mind if I know I'll be able to make the whole tour, but if I'm only going to be there for part of it I'll probably drive myself.

So, I think we are going to be able to go on the trip.

Graze Magazine's audience is mostly hipsters and Mr. Maki has decided he'd rather spend the day with Roadfooders than hipsters.  Iris, is there room in your car for two more?  If not, we can take Mr. Maki's new car!  Ooooo!

Can we get a run-down of the itinerary again?  I'm looking back through posts and it seems like bits of the itinerary are mentioned over several posts, so I'm a little confused (my usual state!)

I am starting a pool on when BR arrives in Milwaukee.  $5 a pick in 15 minute increments.

09:00 start (that's 07:00 in AZ time).   Crap, BR may beat me this time.

Can we do a recap of the tour with places/times either here at the end of thread or at the beginning of the thread or mention what page the true-est version is on? (since we're up to 7 pages?)

Anything wrong with taking Forest Home Avenue from I-43 to Mitchell St. (and not just any Mitchell St., Historic Mitchell St.) and Mitchell east to Kinnickinnickinnickin^C?  Otherwise I can just stay on 43 and exit at 4th St.

The official tour, Iris, is on page 5, bottom of page. Still the same, but as it will be cold by the lake, we are thinking not combining Groppis and HoneyPie for a shared gathering at the park,as Amy and i wanted to. Still meeting at Groppi's. Moving on to HoneyPie, and then the rest, at the times indicated.Keep in touch by phone as to your arrival times.

Brad-I think its a horse a piece, however, I would take I 43 to Lincoln Av, Lincoln east to KK, right on KK, than a left on Russell.....takes you right to Groppis-will be on the right.

I found a breakfast place for the early birds. They open @ 6:30AM & have several Benedicts to choose from as well as anything else you could want for breakfast. Menu.

I'm really disappointed as I was hoping we could get some tables near the fish cleaning station, but the possibility of doing that on a steamy summer day will keep me going through the long, cold winter.

Since I'm currently living in an area where Italian beef sandwiches are virtually unknown, I'm really looking forward to having a beef n' sausage combo ( dipped and hot ) at Dr. Dawg on Saturday. Can anyone whose had an IB sandwich there tell me how they compare to the ones you find in the Chicago area?

Bob, it sounds like you need to bring a cooler so you can take a pound or three of beef home.
 
Based on family schedules and available transportation it looks like I'll be showing up somewhere around Honeypie or Riviera Maya (how's the street parking along KK?) and probably taking off after Dr. Dawg so I can transport Mrs. Chicken to and from work in a timely fashion.

Bob, while I have never eaten at Dr. Dawg's, I know the Scala brand of Italian beef, which they serve, is excellent, imo. To me its just as good as the Italian beef I have had in the Chicago area.

David Ross, a native Chicagoan and owner of Dr. Dawg is a proud graduate of Hot Dog University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude. That should answer your question. You may want to save a little extra room for one of his Niman Ranch cheeseburgers. I prefer mine medium rare dressed with Vern's cheddar cheese, ketchup, well done grilled onions, and bacon. A char cheddar Polish with grilled onions also tops my list. Where else can you find Green River and Sprecher's root beer as a self serve fountain drink?

I should have added, that my friend CSD, taught them everything he knows...so the food is top notch, as have been witnessed by many, many friends...

It's late to be asking advice for Friday, but I just arrived in Chicago (flight delayed because of weather, 45 min. wait for a cab) and I suddenly realized that tomorrow is 'Pie flight' day at Hoosier Mama's Pies.  I don't know much about our Saturday stops because I like to go in 'fresh'.  Are we going to be having pie on Saturday?  Should I save myself and eat something else tomorrow or is there never too much pie?
Also, my first and only dinner in Milwaukee was at Karl Ratzsch's, LOVED it!  Does it have the Milwaukee Food Lover's stamp of approval or do you go elsewhere for German food?
