Farewell Lums

I know Lums has been a topic here. Several months ago I posted that the Lums in Horseheads, NY had been sold and was to be torn down for a Dunkin Doughnuts. Several weeks ago the local paper had an article about Lums and how it was still open but business was down because people assumed it had closed. Well today I drove by and the parking lot was empty and a closed sign was on the door.

Hmm, I thought Lum's was a long gone chain from the 60s. At least that was the last time I tried to work through the list of beers.

another Lums bites the dust... I never went to the Horseheads one, but when I was student at Potsdam we did hit the one in Plattsburgh. good food, but when they opened The Hop in Potsdam, traveling to Plattsburgh for a hot dog, just wasn't the same. But, thank goodness for the sorority girls over there, they made the trip worth it. (no offense to my Phi K sister - I loved Phi K too!)

Yeah, I stumbled into this site trying to find info about Lum's. And I was excited to hear about Plattsburgh, as that's not too far (maybe 2-3 hours) away. But I wanted to make sure that they're still operating before actually trying to go there. (Of course, I could always call, lol) I miss the key lime pie! Tif =8-)

My husband of almost 39 years and I went to a Lums on Dixie Highway in Miami on our first date! Oh the memories! Loved the hot dogs in the beer but I'm amazed no one seems to have mentioned my favorite item on the menu, their fried clams!!! How could a chain that was so good be almost totally gone today?

I don't recall the clams.

There have been several previous posts on Lum's over the psst yr or two which I have read with great nostalgia. I'm fairly certain the one in Davie (off I-595 near Ft Lauderdale) is the last one on the planet! QFan Bonita Springs, FL

ATM, Mike, et al, I guess it doesn't really matter at the end of the day, but I think most of the earlier traffic on Lum's was posted under, "Long-Gone Regional Chains." QFan Bonita Springs, FL

A bit late joining in but - I grew up within the Lums chain. My father ran the store on S. Dixie Hwy mentioned above by jubalee - Store #11 started in store #1 & eventually ran the chain in So. Florida. I have inumberable memories and experiences of opening doors in 3rd grade, washing dishes in 6th, cooking in HS and after a stint in the Air Force I eventually ran my own store until the chain was sold "mostly" for the value of the properties and leases they had among other things. But the ride was well worth it. It's nice to read all the fond memories & ...

I guess it left them. Hot dogs in beer was a neat thing. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN
