Farmers market vendor pricing Mon, 07/19/10 12:28 PM (permalink)
I just got quite a shock but maybe I'm just not with the times. We have a pretty nice Farmers Market here in my part of Florida that operates year around. I was interested in renting a space to sell some ornamental pepper plants I enjoy growing. I did this previously in Tennessee and the Farmers Market charges around 10-12 bucks a week for a space and you could show up or not show up each week it was your choice. Here I just found out the fee is $25 a week payable in advance for an entire year. That's $1300 bucks a year and I don't see even being able to grow enough plants to cover that. I really wonder how the produce vendors make it there at those kinds of rates

We have a farmer's market in downtown Knoxville twice a week during the season.  They tend to be mostly organic vendors and their prices are about 3 times the amount in the grocery store.  I am sure they are fresher and I am sure that it cost them more to grow but I do not pay their prices.

They tend to do well though and the downtown crowd which is mostly expensive condo types and younger want that kind of quality produce and meats.

Our local farmers market charges $195 a space for the 18 weekend season. Day rates are $25 to $35 so your market sounds high as well as inflexible. I can't imagine anyone being able to grow 52 weeks of anything unless they bring in something from beyond their own farm.
