Fat Ho Burgers in Texas Sun, 03/27/11 12:17 PM (permalink)

A new burger dive opened in Waco this week... Fat Ho Burgers... amid controversy over it's name.  A candidate for Road Food ?    Featured are the Supa Fly Ho burger, the Sloppy Ho Brisket burger, the Big Mama Jama burger and the Little Ho burger... you know, for the kids.  Guess one of you Texas folk had better go and check out that Ho.  I want mine deluxe, with cheese.

another open & close flash in the pan place especially with the bars on the doors.
good concept for the short run though.

In Dallas, we call that "filagree".

I thought it was a burger joint owned by a Chinese cook......
A 23 year old woman opening a place is very unique and worthy of support. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders.  The store had many patrons.  This is a local place that perfectly fits the basic Roadfood concept; it comes from the heart.  It is worth checking out for its four patty/three cheese burger along with a side of Hamburger Helper. Go for the beef baby.
Unique locations help too. Sometimes these places can be found in the heart of darkness and you need fencing to keep the natives out.  Some people do not travel to these regions...

I do not see why the Gospel Cafe would have a problem with a place like theirs nearby... churches need sinners to keep in business too.
If they expand, I would put a Big Ho between Five Guys on one side, and In and Out on the other. Now that's a sandwich....

I personally don't have a problem with this. Were it not out of my way I would probabaly enjoy a drive to Waco for a fat ho burger (although I would usually take an asswhippin' than drive IH35). Looks to me like an enterprising young woman with a novel idea,so just leave her alone. The business will stand or fall on it's own merits. The Gospel Cafe like so many other religious zealots here in the bible belt and who are so narrow minded that they can see through a keyhole with both eyes need to mind their own business. Last I checked it's still a free enterprise system.

I think the owner is correct... the world needs to get a sense of humor..and clearly the locals like the product or they wouldn't be lining up or giving good reviews..  The folks at the Gospel Cafe can have their opinion,  that is their right...  and its good for them to have a spiritual challenge to learn to love someone they don't agree with.

I lived in a 'gated' area of NOLA and had a dog named Tramp. I figured if I could not find her, all I had to do was call "Tramp", someone would show up......

I thought all the hotdog chefs on here bought their supplies at wallyworld. Maybe that fine young lady peruses these very pages.

OK Folks. I find it offensive. The owner of this establishment has a mind symptomatic of some of the serious problems facing our country today. For instance Lakita Evans, 23, said
"I was watching 'Phat Girlz'… and they had like a fat ass burger and skinny ass fries.” See, perfectly acceptable language for a young American businesswoman.

And then there's her logic as to why the use of the denigrating term "ho" is perfectly acceptable. "It's not calling people a ho. It's just like they say, 'Oooh, that ho is big,' or, 'That ho is tight!'. "

Yessir. Salute her entrepreneurial spirit and sense of decorum. After all, "It's not calling people a ho."

Well, Michael as much as I've always enjoyed your insightful (or, inciteful) comments, I respectfully have to disagree with you. People need to lighten up and chill out. Here is perfect example of a young African American woman who is making "Fat Ho's" not, being one. I for one give her credit for her entrepreneurial spirit and staying off government food stamps and welfare. She is truly living the "American Dream".

In Dallas, some of of the best Mexican taquerias and African American "soul food" restaurants are located in very "seedy, high crime" areas. That's never stopped any of us "gringos" or "crackers" from eating in them. And, we've never experienced any problems.
This young woman doesn't realize it but, she's a marketing wizard!

I agree completely with twinwillow, which is always easy to do, and others. She is a enhancement to the neighborhood, as I saw many people in the kitchen. Looking closely, you can see it was a Mexican restaurant before. Beats a For Lease sign.
I saw fresh burger patties cooked in a manner that is popular within the community. There is no doneness besides hot and cooked through.  Nothing rare.
I lived in a 'Gated' area of NOLA, but that was where the best food was...
