Navy or Great Northerns done in my smoker(in the water pan with a pork butt smoking), then pintos with a side of mustard greens and buttermilk corn bread! Beans, beans are good for your heart! And so on....

Along with red beans & red bean paste I've seen the black beans.

Red beans seem to be in the "sweet" dessert type dishes while black beans I've only seen in the savory entree dishes.

Never met a bean I didn't like, but my bean treat would be fresh shell beans cooked and finished with some butter, or in a succotash mixed with fresh corn off the cob finished with butter and milk. One of those things you can only get for few weeks each year.

All beans except Kidney, Lima, and Butterbeans.

Especially love good Baked Beans and Navy/Great Northern beans slow-cooked with ham hocks and served with HOT buttered cornbread (no sugar in the cornbread, please )

Love spicy pintos (like Ranch-Style) ON-THE-SIDE with my chili . .. but NEVER IN the chili . . . that's a hangin' offense!

Oh, and I DESPISE Lentils (but they're peas, aren't they?).

I really like true Boston baked Beans, with that bread made in a can. I can't remember the name of the bread.....maybe Boston Brown Bread or something like that. Durgin Park in Boston makes a baked bean to die for.

A pot of Cowboy Beans with a few flour tortillas, though and I'm in heaven! Of course a few Beano tablets before indulging is a must for me!!!....LOL!
Oh, I remember making a bread like that with the kids. It was pretty much fool proof. We'd smear it with butter and drink lots of milk with it. We'd also make home made apple butter to eat with it. I'll see if I can find the recipe or a similar one. I love flour tortillas, too, especially home made.

WOW! I'd never have thought of using those particular spices in beans. Thanks for the tip.

I love eating garbonzo beans in salads and straight from the can. In cooking recipes I like navy beans and pinto beans.

My Friend Giovanni (a Sicilian) seems to keep a pot of lentils simmering much of the time. I can't recall having tried them, though.

Hey, sneetch, how do you cook lentils?

Since you like them, maybe I did something wrong in my past preparations.

Have you got a recipe or two that you could share?

Quite the opposite. His bean recipe causes a lot of fans to be turned ON, around here.

OK... I will make all attempts to make my next post to this thread well aired.

OK. My favorite is of course White Acre peas. Sometimes beans ain't really BEANS (green 'beans' for example). Even if U have snaps, them ain't really "beans". Other than my White Acres, the other members of the crowder pea family are my second best choice. Other than that, I pretty much like them all, even Garbanzos.

If you have leftover black-eye peas, pinto or red kidney beans you can make sausage patties.Drain and mash them.Add egg,a little flour, sage and crushed red pepper flakes.Make patties and fry in bacon grease.Serve with grits and eggs.

I have never met a Crowder I didn't like either, Pard. I even helped pick and can a few truckloads of them around Moscow... Moscow, Texas, that is. They're all good eating!

Iqdiva, have you ever considered running for political office? If not, would you mind terribly if I wrote you in? You sure do have a way with beans, peas, and greens!

Bean Cakes......... I've made a bunch over the years. Sadly, I was the only one in the family who had seconds, thirds, etc. Shoot, a little discouragement can't keep a good man down!!!

I'd have sure helped you eat them, Pard. My own kids and step-kids always encouraged my efforts, even to helping make tons of boudin. Most of them could eat a pound of our product for breakfast and another pound when they got home from school. None of them grew up puny, not even the little girl babies.

Yummm this thread reminds me of my childhood.
Pintos, fried potatoes, cornbread, fresh green onions, pickled green peppers and tomatoes... (meat just messed up the 'balance' of my plate) - so I passed on meat unless it was fried out fat back.

I'm not familiar with marrow beans... what are tbey?
