Favorite Brands of Canned Soup??

With the winter coming up I like to stock up on canned soups that I can heat up at lunchtime at work. My preference is for the thicker heartier soups like bean, split pea, etc.

What are your favorite brands? I'm always on the lookout for a new and possibly better brand of soup.

Here in the NY/NJ area, in my opinion the best canned soup available is Goya Black Bean soup. I usually doctor it up with some olive oil, grated cheese, and some chopped onions, and it easily beats at least 90% of the black bean soups I have had in restaurants. For about 79 cents a can.

Another brand I like is Progresso. Their split pea and navy bean are pretty good. When they are on sale at Shoprite they usually go for about $1 per can.

It seems to me that the various brands of "gourmet" canned soups never seem to measure up to these 2 brands, at about 3 times the price.

    HI KEN,
LAST WEEK I STARTED STOCKING UP ON CANNED SOUP ALSO,
WHEN I DON'T FEEL LIKE MAKING A POT OF SOUP,I KEEP THIS ON HAND
OK SO WHAT BRAND---- NALLEY'S. GOOD COMFORT SOUP.
    ONE CAN IS MEAL.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN GET NALLEY'S IN YOUR AREA.
BUT GIVE A CAN A TRY.
    ENJOY YOUR SOUP.

Most grocery stores have a deli section serving fresh hot soup. You can purchase these and reheat. Grocery stores sell leftover soup from the previous day. Personally, I find deli soups far superior to the canned variety. The canned are either way to salty or preserved for my tastes. I have tried mall soup. For my tastes they seem to have been left on the burner for way to many days. Do not recall any of them made fresh. Hope this helps.

For the last several years, I have bought all of my canned soup at Big Lots. It is almost like going into a diner in a strange town. You never know what they will have. It provides variey. They often sell quality short dated soups not found in your local trading area, or soups that the manufacturer put on "deal" to any and all comers. In the past few years, I have bought Wolfgang Puck, English-made HJ Heinz of Hayes, Middlesex, England, Nalley's, Progresso, and Jurgen Langbein of Germany there. The average price I paid was $1.00 a can.

The Nalley's soups in their "Meals for Now" line were great while they lasted, but it is a west coast brand. You can't ordinarily get them in New York. Ironically, the label says it is distributed by Birds Eye Foods of Rochester, NY.

I like Baxters for their Lobster Bisque and other seafood soups. If you can find Pepperidge Farm soups, they are very flavorful for canned.I agree with david_nyc about Big Lots. They have some very interesting varieties of not only soup, but many other foods. Its like going on a treasure hunt...

I 3rd Big Lots. It's always and adventure. Nalley's is not redaly available in my area except at Big Lots. I love the Nalley's "stand up" chili! I must try to find some of their other soups.

It may be an aquired taste but I like Austex stew. Hmmm, kinda a soup maybe?

I really like Campbell's Chunky Clam Chowder over Progresso's

    Progresso's has a sweeter flavor

I guess I will have to make a trip to my local Big Lots to check out their soup.

I am so glad the heat finally broke, and we are getting rain (2+ inches over the last 36 hours), but it is a COLD rain only 51 degrees here today.

Hmmmmmmm sounds like a perfectly good evening to make a pot o soup.

Hands down Tabachniks (spelling?) frozen soup made from artisean water. Just like homemade......my favorite is chicken noodle w/matzoh balls and carrots. Also their french onion is great too.

I know I'm going to take some heat on this but oh well, one of my favorites is Campbell's Tomato Bisque. I put half a can of half & half and heat. To serve I sprinkle some parmesan on top and stir. This and a grilled cheese on sourdough.......

Stopped at Big Lots today just to look at their canned soups...thanks to you guys! Just had a bowl of Muir Glen Organic Creamy Tomato - really good! 'Course I like most all the Muir Glen products. The can is 1 lb. 3 oz., not condensed, no need to add water, two 1 cup servings at 170 calories per serving. Delicious with cheese toast!

Also picked up Progresso Roasted Chicken Italiano to try and some roasted red pepper spread (ajvar) to top bruschetta. If you have never tried ajvar, you are missing a treat.

    Ken,
I agree with you about the Goya Black Bean. I cut celery chunks into it with the onion, and a tad of Frank's Louisiana hot sauce, and let it simmer. Also agree most Progresso soups are quite good. Of late, I like the Creamy Mushroom as a side dish...always need a side dish.

I agree, and also like to add a couple of cans of Snow's mince clams and a chunk of butter....sprinkle with a litte Old Bay and serve!

I really like Campbell's Select soups. Especially their clam chowder to which I add a can of Snow's (chopped) clams.
Their Italian Wedding soup is also a favorite of mine.
Recently, I bought a can of Wolfang Puck's "Wild Mushroom" soup from Wholefoods and thought is was very good.

lets not foregt the basics..there is no canned soup I think I like better than good old campbells cream of mushroom .If I am feeling esp cold and blue , I like to make it with only a half can of milk- sometimes i even ad some sauteed mushrooms...but even plain ,with a good old velvetta grilled cheese on the side CCOM is pure comfort!

I'm trying to figure out, just what is Artisean Water? Put that in bold type on a can and I guess you can bump the price 25%.

All artesian means is that Tabatchnick's have their own well:
    http://www.tabatchnick.com/about.asp

Its either that, or buying township water from New Jersey's cancer alley water suppliers.

If you like the campbells select, try the campbells chunky clam chowder.

The select is water based where as the chunky is cream based.

To me the cream adds an extra depth to the flavor and makes it a tad richer.

I will definately have to get some minced clams, all these years it never dawned on me to add extra clams...

I like most of Sylvia's "Queen of Soul Food" soups as they deliver a lot of flavor with less of a highly processed taste. Goya's is also good and the black bean is my wife's favorite.

Pastene Soups are a real favorite with me for a high end soup. Here is a link to a thread where I went into some detail about them.
    http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15189

I have mentioned Campbell's Grilled Chicken & Sausage Gumbo to several friends and they all love it. I usually opt for the Healthy Request variety with 40% less sodium as Campbell's tends to go hog wild with salt.

I can't understand anyone eating Snapping Turtle unless they're on Survivor or winning good money on a bet. Snapping Turtles eat all sorts of crap, host many parasites and are best left alone in the wild.
