Favorite Brands of Sauerkraut?

I guess this goes in the "Side Orders" forum, although it's really an "on-top-of" item...

Anyway, what is your favorite brand of commercially made sauerkraut?

Here in NJ I seem to like Batampte the best, but it doesn't knock me out, I'm still looking for something better. A brand I really like is Frank's ( http://www.sauerkraut.com/brands.htm) but in NJ it only seems to be available in one of the Dollar Stores and only occasionally.

We tried Hebrew National for our Labor Day cookout, and it was really dissapointing--very bland, which is mainly why I decided to post this question..to get opinions on what is also out there.

Thanks.

all the packaged kraut tastes the same to me.
every time I try a new one I'm expecting it to taste like the stuff you used to get years ago at hot dog carts that was a dark color & wasn't as crunchy as the bagged stuff.
maybe you have to cook it down for hours to get that taste.

my favorite used to be Farman's, a local brand.. the name was sold years ago and has been passed around to several companies and although the name and some of the products still exist, they don't taste anything like the originals...

I, too, like Frank's sauerkraut, when I can find it or when I go out to Ohio. Often, you can find their other brand, SnowFloss, at Xpect Discounts in Connecticut, from this Ohio-owned chain. I think B&G canned sauerkraut, available in the NYC metro area, is made by the same folks in Fremont, Ohio, but I have never done a side-by-side comparison to see if the recipe is the same. They also private label.

David, is Snowfloss the same product as Franks, or is there a difference? I've never seen Snowfloss, but I will try it if I come across it.

    Thanks.

Years ago (35-40) while living in Dallas a favorite lunch spot was Hans Mueller's little diner, just he and his wife operated this 15 or so seat German eatery. The heated sauerkraut they served was delicious. Finally, after my many beggings, Hans sat down and wrote out for me their recipe. Hans recommended Gundelsheims kraut. Not available here so I use Claussens.
Recipe as written by Hans Mueller..........
    28 oz. kraut(drained, rinsed, drained)
fry 1/4 lb. bacon, remove, crumble and set aside
in bacon grease, saute 1/2 an onion and 1/2 a tart apple
combine all ingredients and add 1 tsp. caraway seeds, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 2/3 cup water(I prefer beef broth) and simmer 1-3 hours.
A family favorite, I prepared this Sunday at our daughter, son-in-law and the world's greatest grandson, baby Alex home. We grilled up some bratwurst and Katie made her obligatory mac and cheese. We enjoyed a feast!
NOTE... When time allows, we like to prepare both the kraut and brats separately then place the brats atop the kraut and very slowly simmer for awhile. They seem to work well together.
    Enjoy!

The dark brown kraut comes out of a can and has been cooked, unlike the bagged fresh kraut.  Its also probably been sitting in a warmer oxidizing for some time.

even the stuff out of a can doesn't have that oxidized look or taste, unless you cook it for hours

Ehmer's from NYC is great! I buy it in a sealed bag at Central Market in Dallas.
It's almost as good as, fresh from a NY deli.

As with B&G, I have never done a side-by-side test between Frank's and SnowFloss. I do like the SnowFloss product as well. My preference for Frank's may just be because of the green label!

    Greetings!

The most popular Sauerkraut brand here in Germany is Hengstenberg "Mildessa" Sauerkraut.

    Hengstenberg:
    http://www.hengstenberg.d...c34c3d03ee1ddf1c94f043

On most of the weekly markets, local brands of Sauerkraut are sold fresh from a barrel here in Germany, my Grandma used to rinse the Sauerkraut for a short time in cold water, before preparing one of the trad. german Sauerkraut dishes...

    Kind regards

    Michael

    Greetings, John!

Are you able to buy the very many sorts of Hengstenberg Sauerkraut in the USA...?

The Hengstenberg quality is the very first choice here in Germany, for the best Sauerkraut.

    Kind regards

I didn't know that there was more than one kind. I just see the Hengtstenberg Mildessa in stores. That's what I get. I use it for bratwurst.

My problem Michael from Germany is that this shopping thread was started in a RESTAURANT side orders forum.  There is no Roadfood content in this thread, and it should be moved to Miscellaneous Food-Related where it belongs.

Posts that have nothing to do with restaurants have appeared dozens and doxzens of times under the different forums.  Some just posted on making biscuits at home and it was put on the breakfast forum.  The other day someone posted on Sandwiches  about the tomato sandwich that they had made at home. This happens all the time  so it looks like no one seems to care  or there would have to be a whole load of posts being moved to the "right" forum!
