Favorite Candy Bars

Every once in a while I get a craving that only one kind of candy bar will quell: Goldenberg's Peanut Chews. That thin layer of dark chocolate around that chewy peanut center is just about perfection. Perfection would be if it didn't get stuck in my teeth. But that is the price to pay for yumminess. When you need a candy bar, what do you reach for?

Milky Way is my favorite. I like the original best, although the newer dark version isn't bad.

Frozen Snickers. For the odd craving, an Idaho Spud bar, which is chocolate marshmallow enrobed in chocolate and sprinkled with coconut. Eric, Drooling

I don't care what it is as long as it has caramel in it A close second is a good quality dark chocolat bar, surprisingly the one sold by Super Fresh (A&P) under their label is quite good. I'm so particular about the chocolat that back when Hersheys changed their Special Bar to include a little milk & more sugar I detected the difference. I called Hersheys & they admitted they had increased these ingrediants since most people in the USA don't really like true dark chocolat. They sent me some of the older bars they still had in stock & I slowly enjoyed them.

If I'm facing just the usual main choices, I go with a Babe Ruth. It covers all the basics, as far as I'm concerned. For real fun, though, I like a Sky Bar. There are also those slabs of Lindt chocolate - my girlfriend likes the ones with raspberry, I love the white chocolate...but that's moving a bit beyond chocolate bars, perhaps. JL

I like Butterfingers, and Baby Ruth, but rarely eat them. I'm not making a boat payment for my dentist! But lately I've been eating 70% cocoa content, dark chocolate from europe.

Welch's Fudge Bar- Fudge with a layer of grape jelly all covered in dark chocolate. 2. Mallo-Cups- Marshmallow fluff in a chocolate cup..2 per pkg. I'm with the Mayor---Goo Goo Clusters ---and they're really cheap (4 for a buck at the dollar store---though sometimes a little stale). I usually splurge on local chocolates around the holidays (Jon L. Stopay of Plains is the best of the lot here). I'm intrigued by the Welch Fudge (w/jelly) bar---and doubt I've ever seen one. Favorite discontinued/seriously altered candy bar---Gardiner's Peanut Butter Meltaway (from Tyrone, PA). Melt-in-your-mouth good! Others that I grab now and then: 5th Avenue Mr. Goodbar And maybe it's the PA in me, but a Milk Chocolate Hershey Bar does the trick too, but they never taste better than after the Hershey Chocolate tour at Hersheypark.

Sky Bars are widely available in New England. There was a period some years ago when I didn't see them around, but now I see them everywhere. I believe Necco has a website you can check out - http://www.necco.com naturally. They may have information on availability, etc. JL

Stan The Welch's Fudge Bar was really 'different' It used grape jelly on top like the carmel on a Milky Way bar...then coated with a thin coat of dark chocolate. The grape/fudge combo was really good. Haven't seen them for awhile..like a decade or so ! Anyone choose a "U NO" bar? There's another one that was a bit off-center for traditional candy bars. My version of the Payday Bar is any of the "Pecan Log's" Stuckey's on the major highways has them As does WalMart. The good ones have a carmel core..the cheaper ones used nougat (white-fluff) for the core. Not as good as a Goo-GOO CLUSTER, stale or not !!!

Growing up, my favorite was Reese's Peanut Butter Cups (not technically a candy "bar" I suppose). Over the past several years, that's changed to a pair of candy bars I often bought in Canada: Coffee Crisp and Aero. I don't even LIKE coffee, yet love Coffee Crisp. In fact, Canada gets a lot of good candy bars we don't easily find in the States. Ironically, CC and Aero are both made by Nestle, I believe.

Mallo Cups. I tried to order some for a customer of the store I work in and was told by our buyer that because of a family feud that Mallo Cups are not being made for the time being.

Didn't you/do you still get those cardboard "points" in the Mallo Cups?? Did anyone ever "win" anything good? That's what I remember about those, and the weird texture when you bit in 'em!

Phil, Check out your local Super Fresh (A&P), In the aisle where the foreign foods are (Mexican, Chinese, etc) some of the stores are now carrying a selection of British items, among them candies (several different flavors of Aero bars)

There is a small grocery near me that has the miniature Goldenberg's Peanut Chews for a nickel, each one about a bite's worth. I always buy 20 of 'em and sometimes make that my dessert.

Thanks, Ocdreamr. I don't have any A&Ps or Super Freshes near me, but I do have a British-specialty store near me where I can get these things when the need strikes.

Frozen Snickers. Yum. And mashed Whoppers on vanilla ice cream, which technically isn't a chocolate bar but who gives a whoop because it tastes great.

Anything from Hershey's but the alltime #1 seller is Hershey's Milk Chocolate. Reeses is great for a change, and their Nutrageous is super. One that is hard to find is Hershey's Golden Almond, a "premium" candy bar. Hershey Kisses aren't bars but they fill the bill. In fact, I'm going to eat some now while Al the Mayor is getting sticky eating his goo-goo cluster. Make sure he washed his hands before shaking hands with him.

Zagnut is the one for me. Clark makes the best peanut flake inside, and the wacky pink coconut outside always makes me laugh. Hit or miss to find em in the Bay Area, though.
