Favorite Cold drink on a Hot & Humid Day?

We just got past our first heat wave here in New Jersey, and I was scrambling to drink all the cold water I could find. I prefer a tall seltzer with a couple slices of lemon. My favorite (besides an ice cold 'brewski') is taking a brown bottle of Stewarts Root Beer and putting it in the freezer for an hour before drinking, and boy oh boy is it refreshing. What do you enjoy drinking?

This is a very old PA Dutch recipe and is sort of an acquired taste. They used to take pails of this out to the fields for the workers' afternoon break. For years, my daughter has preferred this to Gatorate when she plays softball in hot weather and I am making about 4 gallons this morning since her team is convinced that it's also the Power Drink that helped them get to the final championship playoff this afternoon.

    SWITCHEL

    8 cups water, divided
    1 cup sugar
    1/ 2 cup cider vinegar
    1/ 2 cup molasses
    1/ 2 tsp. ground ginger
    4 cloves

In saucepan, put only 2 cups of water and the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. When it comes to a boil, take off from heat, remove cloves, and cool to room temperature. Chill in refrigerator. When ready to serve, add the remaining 6 cups of very cold water.

I guess I have really converted to the Kentuciana culture because my first thoughts upon reading this topic wer "SunTea, cut 50/50 with tart lemonade". I say converted because no self-respecting SoCal guy could respond without including "Evian" or some other exotic (gold-labeled) bottled water!!
    Second-Thought would have to be a Sonic-Hiway 44, Strawberry-Lemon Slush!!!

If you were *really* a convert of the orthodox variety, you'd have mentioned Big Red somewhere in your post. Or at least Vernors or Ale8One.

Myself, I grew up on brown creme soda, so imagine my disgust on trying the red creme variety as exemplified by Big Red. But you know what? It grew on me after a while, and I actually started enjoying Diet Big Red. The sugared version was still too sweet for me.

These days, my preferred thirst quencher is Canada Dry Ginger Ale, no ice, and also placed in the freezer for awhile as another poster had mentioned.

If I'm really hot & thisty just give me a tall glass of ice water, anything with sugar just won't work, seltzer water is a close second. Once I've satisfied the thirst then give me a spearmint snowball to finish the coolong off.

While I have toyed with BIG RED in both regular and diet forms, I never built a taste for it. A decade back we would pick up a six-pack or two while on the road on our summer visits East...I would then introduce my SoCal classes to it in "Tasting Sessions" during our study of the Cola Wars. The students, almost 100% rejected the bubblegum flavor of Big Red. In about 1995 or so, It began appearing in the discounted soda "tubs" that are always in the front of a convenience store (AM/PM). They still sell them out West at cut-rate prices, but it isn't the cultural icon that it is here in Kentuciana. My Secretary always started her work day with a Big Gulp (44oz) of Big Red, rather than coffee at the college here.
I enjoy Vernor's, but it is an import here (from Michigan) and not big on the local market. Ale81 is interesting. It qualifies as a TRUE Local/Regional soda... but it isn't my favorite !!!
As far as soda as a thirst-quencher..Canada Dry Bitter Lemon was great...or one of the Collins Mixers.

I always keep a pitcher of homemade sweet tea in the fridge during the summer. I also make homemade lemonade every now and then. Of course, an ice-cold lager sure hits the spot!

If its really hot & humid, for that special, badly needed cooling off, plain old ice water is the best; but for regular, routine drinking in any summer weather it's unsweetened iced tea. I know unsweetened isn't the Southern way to drink iced tea, but I'm the odd man out on that one; sweetened iced tea (or hot coffee) both taste about like doses of medicine to me. The only beverage of these sorts in which I like a little sugar is hot tea.

I'm not too picky when the temp is REALLY hot, which to me means over 85; I wilt in the sun and even here in N. Vermont its too hot for me much of the summer. But favorites would be water, lemonade/limeade (I love Santa Cruz Organic), root beer (Virgils) and light, crisp (but still flavorful) BEER, a great pilsener (Lakefront Klisch, Victory Prima Pils) or German wheat (Paulaner or Maisels especially) really hits the spot.

    Lou,
Big Red is a soda...Very Popular in some areas of the South and SouthWest..It is red in color (duhh!!!) and has a flavor that can best be compared to the extra-sweet pink bubblegum we used to chew. It has as much or more caffine as Mountain Dew and (taste-wise) more than double the sugar.
In this area it is one of the 'independents' like Dr Pepper that one finds in the soda machines and multi-handle dispensors as well as in the stores.

RE- The milk consumer's...I agree that so long as milk is ICE-COLD it is good, the problem is if it rises in temperature it loses that quality almost immediately...Remember those paper milk containers at school...barely cool at times.

I learned this from a friend who summers in Watch Hill, RI. It's called a Southside, and is simply lemonade and Goslings dark rum over ice, with a sprig of mint. Nothing is more refreshing.

The ONLY time I ever drink Big Red is with barbeque. Just have to have it! My husband and kids love to make Big Red floats....Blue Bell homemade vanilla and Big Red.

With our heat index averaging 103-108, and the humidity so thick you have to chew the air and swallow it to breathe, ice tea and lots of it, and lots of water.

Can only enjoy my beer when it gets cooler in the evenings....to dang hot!

Ice tea does it for me. No lemon. Although, I do recall a day up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Northern Minnesota when two ice-crusted bottles of beer were the best things I'd ever tasted in my life. They came at the end of a long day of paddling in 90-degree heat.
