Favorite Dog Condiments

So what do you put on that perfect dog? I confess, most of the time I use nothing. I want to taste the dog. Once I am comfortable with the dog, brat or brot I will use some limited condiments. Mustard is number one with me. I have also noted it is also number one among many of the dog experts that post here. On that score I feel in pretty good company. My second favorite I seldomly see mentioned here. Corn relish! It is the only relish I see fit for a dog. Am I the only one here that thinks so?

I also prefer to taste the dog with just a little bit of brown deli style mustard. Occasionally I'll have a chili dog. I don't like relish with the exception of the unique relish at Rutt's Hut which goes well with their deep fried dogs.

I live in Chicago most of the time but i prefer mine with cole slaw and mustard. Anything's good actually. Getting a slaw dog here won't happen so i do my own with KFC slaw.

The only thing that can make a great dog taste better to me is some bacon. Enjoy slaw and chili..w/o beans, and cheese, sauted onions and maybe a little BBQ sauce.

Xfireguy, You got me with the bacon, few things better on the grill than bacon wrapped dogs. Don't know if you really taste the dog that way, but by then who cares? I think I would eat a shoe if it were wrapped in enough bacon.

I like the following three combos: sharp mustard and kraut, mustard, dill relish, and onions, and chili. And at the White Hut, grilled onions and yellow mustard. Top

Hate to sound like a hometown booster, but the classic Chicago dog cannot be beat. Mustard, neon green relish, tomato, onions, pickle, hot peppers, and a dash of celery salt(optional). In all fairness, I have also enjoyed the New York cart dogs with brown mustard and that amazing onion relish. Years ago I managed to procure two number ten cans of the stuff. Over the next several months I had a steady diet of hot dogs just so I could satisfy my craving for onion relish, and so I could use it all up before it went bad.

Mustard, relish, chopped onions and sauerkraut. Sometimes a mustard-relish mixture. Sometimes a hot relish. Then there are the coneys with Cincinnati chili, chopped onions and shredded cheese. But I don't really consider those hotdogs. In fact, I don't even consider them to be hot dogs.

Spicy brown mustard, a little diced onion, and some Nances corn relish. And on a toasted bun if possible (at home, it always is).

The "perfect dog" is always a matter of mood, but as a general rule, there is never anything wrong with a light application of mustard and about a teaspoon each of sweet pickle relish and chopped white onions.

As Lucky Bishop said, "a matter of mood". I normally like mine with chili sauce, onions, chopped kosher dill pickles, mustard and cheese when it's handy. There's other times I crave one with chopped up green olives, green pepper, pickle, onion and mustard. I'll pass on the plain ones... Those just dont cut it for me... (When I say mustard, I normally use the standard yellow deli style)

As any self respecting West Virginian can tell you, hot dog condiments are as follows: mustard,onion,chili(no beans) & slaw. If you don't eat your dogs like this then you are not a true Mountaineer.

The Sundancer prefers what is not available here in Knoxville, TN and that is the neon green relish that is around the Chicago-Milwaukee region. It is the best. Unfortunately we in Knoxville not only have no good hot dog places, we have no good relish available. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Hiram's, a hot dog restaurant in Fort Lee, NJ, right across the street from a similar establishment called Callahan's, by the way, used to have a red relish that was my favorite hot-dog condiment of all time. Then the maker stopped making it, and I discovered the relish at Rutt's Hut, which I have been to known to eat separate with the little wooden french-fry fork. I also really like a wedge of pickle. And the mustard MUST be brown!

Greyghost, I'm with you "I think I would eat a shoe if it were wrapped in enough bacon." But only if it's good bacon! With a hot dog, though: - Brown whole-grain mustard if it's a gourmet pup;
- yellow mustard if it's standard;
- fluorescent green relish if it's a Chicago; and
- onion with all.

OK, this is a good opportunity for me to try a new challenge since the summer season is just beginning. I don't eat dogs at home, only out. Right now, Flo's Hot Dogs (praised by Jane and Michael, who say "When you are far from this roadside gem, you will dream of Flo's hot dogs, longingly) is right up Rt. 1 from me. Here is the challenge. As all those who go to Flo's know, the classic way to get a dog (along with a can of Moxie, though you will hear cries of protest from people behind you in line who think it's disgusting) is with Flo's hot sauce, mayonnaise and celery salt. Flo's sauce recipe is in a safe deposit box somewhere in northern New England. We initially thought that it had just four ingredients and that the University of New Hampshire chemistry department had tried and failed to figure them out. When I mentioned this to friends who were visiting, Flo's successor (her daughter-in-law Gail, I believe), piped up and said, no there were 4 impossible-to-figure-out ingredients that you could buy at any grocery store. One of the friends thought a good long time amidst his dog and concluded that one was watermelon pickle. Any other nominees?

Sorry. Clarification on that last one. (I couldn't figure out how to edit myself) 4 impossible-to-identify ingredients amongst all the rest in the recipe.

Usually just mustard and a few diced onions. However, at home it's mustard and Datl Do It Hellish Relish. Not real-real hot but enough kick to make me smile and want another.

I like hot dogs wrapped in bacon then on the grill or under the broiler. Top with chili, cheese and onions.

Okay I know I'll get it for this but I like a good dog with simple Heinz ketchup and some chopped up onions either grilled or boiled, I just like that combo. But also my next favorite way is little hot dogs from the Troy Pork store on steamed little rolls with chopped onions and Famous lunch greek hot dog sauce...wow!

No doubt for the Sundancer is the neon green Chicago-Milwaukee relish that is unavailable here in Knoxville along with onions, dab of regular mustard, some Housers chili and a steamed bun. Good weiners are becoming more available in Knoxville. There are no good hot dog places in Knoxville. If you want a good dog, you make it yourself. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN
