Favorite Pickle Flavors

I'm working on a very interesting new project and I need some feedback about folks' favorite pickle flavors across the country. For instance, has anybody ever heard of a mustard pickle? I heard they were big in Canada, but I've never seen that flavor before. All feedback is greatly appreciated!

Hello All, Occasionally, we can "Icicle Pickles." When you eat them, they initially taste like bread and butter pickles, then the heat hits your mouth, and whoeeee. Hot and tasty. Take Care, Fieldthistle

My favorite is the "half sour" pickle. These are the ones that are a bright green color, and that tend to reek of garlic. For those of you who don't have an authentic Kosher Delicatessen (normally the only good source) to buy them from, I find that the Batampte brand is a good substitute. This particular brand is always refrigerated, and can be found near the dairy section in many supermarkets in the NY/NJ area. Whether it is sold outside of this region is a question that I do not know the answer to. As to the "mustard pickle", I believe that this is actually a product that consists of pieces of pickles that are mixed with large amounts of yellow mustard. I see products of this type on the shelf in most supermarkets, although I have never tried them.

Half-sour is my favorite also. I remember as a kid going to Cohen's Deli on Central Ave in Far Rockaway where there were two barrels of pickles at all times. Lift the wooden cover and help yourself to a well done pickle from one barrel or a half-sour one from the other. And if I didn't have the 2 cents or whatever the price was then Mr.C would say "so you'll owe me". And he would remind me every time he saw me until I paid up. And he did that with all his customers---never kept books, with his memory he didn't need books. I wish I didn't.

My favorite flavored pickle (other than garlic dill) has to be the sweet orange strip pickles made by the Sechler's of St Joe, IN. (www.sechlerspickles.com). They have a large selection of tasty pickles. I pick them up when I go to Indiana every year! Barney

Dearfolk, Quite a few years ago, Roddenbery's (spelling corect!) in Cairo, Georgia used to make an occasional run of sour gherkins, primarily for Passover (I suppose) - in any event, mainly for the Jewish communities in their home territory. My father truly looked forward to having this annual treat and laid in a supply of two or three jars. I can't remember if they disappeared before or after his death in late 1973. My favorite pickle flavor is real Kosher dills (we Presbyterians are allowed - hey, I love matzohs as well!). Gracious sakes, I'm thankful that such pickles aren't particularly fattening... I can eat a third of a big jar at a sitting, when I'm in the mood. I can't recall that I've ever tasted sour pickles, although my Grandfather Carlton loved them. For some reason, I've never particularly liked sweet pickles. And I add extra dill to my dill relish whenever I use such. Dilliciously, Ort. Carlton in 30601-land.

I love Polish dills, which are becoming harder and harder to find in a whole pickle. Spears, yes, whole, no. I think mustard pickle sounds wonderful. And I love watermelon rind pickles, but you can't find those in Colorado very easily either. (And yes, I know it's a pickled watermelon, not a cucumber.)

quote: Nice site and interesting items, but they charge $6.95 handling charge per box in addition to the cost of shipping. That is rather steep for a $4.00 jar of pickles. But they sound really good though.... yum!

I have to say the bread and butter pickles, especially on a homemade sandwich. There was a mix of pickled veggies in a jar that my mother always used to get, but I haven't seen it for some time. It had pickles, peppers, cauliflower etc. Andrea

Mmm, all this sounds good! My standard is Claussen pickles. You must keep em cold so thats where you must look at the store to find them. I also use the juice for recipes. A fruit stand near me sold some jalapeno and garlic pickles and they were real great! I am afraid just made for local sales but I bet someone sells them nationally. Good flavor combo! Joe

My favorite cucumber pickles are definitely brine pickles (topors et al) But my favorite pickled foods are pickled eggs, pickled sausages, and pickled pigs knuckles (hocks) ... all eaten in the appropriate establishment of course.

Kay, I get the Claussens that are cut in half. I just eat a half every once in a while. That salt must be why they are so good. Joe

I like Watermelon Rind and at the Charlotte Farmers market, you can buy salt pickles from a lady there. These are good also. I haven't seen these in many other parts of the country.

Wow....talk about small world...I was born in Far Rockaway...my mother was born in Arverne...her father had the Finegold Pontiac dealership in Far Rockaway...my father's father owned Cohen's Dairy...I think that was Rockaway Beach...and he taught Toddy (of Toddy's in Cedarhurst) how to make pickled herring....a good half sour or a really really sour...now that's a pickle....

I find them locally, you can also ask your grocer if they can order them. If you have a "Cost Plus" store in your area, they carry them. Good luck! They are great.
