Favorite TV shows from your childhood - Sat, 01/31/09 2:39 PM
Growing up in the 1950s, I was a "TV kid" from a very early age, and have lots of favorites from that decade. My all-time favorite is definitely Captain Midnight, starring Richard Webb, Sid Melton and Olan Soule. A truly great Cold War / sci-fi series that captures the feel of the '50s. Due to legal complications, the show was retitled Jet Jackson, Flying Commando for syndication. They even went so far as to re-dub the episodes so that the name "Captain Midnight" came out "Jet Jackson". I have all but ten of the thirty-nine episodes on VHS, and I eagerly await the day that entire series is available on DVD.

Some more of my childhood favorites: The Adventures of Superman, Annie Oakley, Circus Boy ( with a very young Mickey Dolenz ), Rin-Tin-Tin, Wild Bill Hickock, Tales of the Texas Rangers ( my #2 fav ), the Roy Rogers Show, and Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe. All of them great memories, and I'm so glad that some of these shows are popping up on DVD.

MilwFoodLovers, you've mentioned a bunch that are on my favorites list, like Highway Patrol ( Ten-four, ten-four! ), Fury, the Mickey Mouse Club ( Darlene was my childhood crush ), the Jack Benny Program, Bat Masterson, I Love Lucy ( the greatest sitcom of all ), The Adventures of Robin Hood, and my beloved Three Stooges ( I idolize Curly. ) Speaking of Robin Hood, I just bought the first season ( 39 episodes ) on DVD yesterday. Now if I could only find time to watch them!

You can get many of those shows at this site:

Just take some time and go through it.  There's quite a few new things every month. I've been buying from this place for years.

What about American Bandstand?  My sister & I would run home every day from school to watch-,  do the  stroll, cha-cha, & jitterbug.  We so wanted to go to Philadephia & slow dance with Kenny.

Mickey Mouse Club- especially Spin & Marty.  I had such a crush on Tim Considine.

Do you remember the Robin Hood theme song:

"Robin Hood, Robin Hood riding through the glen.
Robin Hood, Robin Hood with his merry men"

Oh no!!  I now can't get the Robin Hood song out of my head!!!

International Showtime-- A variety show in what I seem to remember was sort of a circus setting and was hosted by Don Ameche
Ed Sullivan-- I always went crazy whenever the puppet mouse, Topo Gigio was on (Eddie, kiss-a-me goo' night!), and the guy that spun the plates on top of the tall sticks.
The Jackie Gleason Show-- I loved those June Taylor Dancers and Frank Fontaine as Crazy Guggenheim.
Rocky and Bullwinkle
The Three Stooges
Captain Kangaroo
Local Philadelphia kids' shows:
Happy the Clown
Gene London
Pixanne
Sally Starr's Popeye Theater

Getting up on Saturday morning to watch "Looney Tunes" Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Elmer Fudd and let us not forget Casper, Rocky & Bullwinkle and Chilly Willy the Penguin. I have tried to watch the new shows with my Niece and Nephew, but I just can't can't get into Elmo, Doodle Bops, and I really don't like Barney!

leethebard - back in the late '80s, when I first started collecting vintage television on VHS, I was lucky enough to obtain an episode of Rootie Kazootie on tape. I got it from a mail-order outfit in NYC, and it's one of only two episodes known to still exist. All the familiar characters are in it; Rootie, Gala Poochie the Pup, Polka Dottie, and the villainous Poison Soomac. It's even got the original commercials from the early '50s. A rare piece of TV history.

nocarolina...and others too,
There's a great DVD out there called, "Hiya, Kids: A 50's Saturday Morning" which contains full episodes of over 20 great children's tv shows from the 50's ,including a full episode of Rootie Kazootie. I'm not sure if it includes one of the two rootie Kazootie episodes you're talking about, but give it a look. There are all the greats there, and maybe some you've forgotten...they're arranged also by age group interest. I highlr recommend this Dvd for bringing back great memories, or if you're under 60, to show you what pioneering tv was like. Amazon has a complete list of each episode. Enjoy...so "Pluck your magic Twanger,Froggie'!!!!

Well, after I outgrew:

Scooby Doo
Captain Kangaroo
Hong Kong Phoey
The Flintstones
The Jetsons
Speed Racer (Meh. It was on.)
Kimba the White Lion (totally classic proto-Lion King)
Sesame Street
The Electric Company
and the assorted Loony Toons/Merry Melodies Saturday Morning fare

I suppose my favorite shows in the late 70s and early 80s were:

Little House on the Prairie
Gilligan's Island reruns
Bewitched reruns
Benson (Who knew two of them would end up on Star Trek?)
Knight Rider
The A-Team (I can still do the whole intro)
Voltron (anybody? anybody?)
Fraggle Rock (Remember when cable was new and shiny?)
The Muppet Show
Barney Miller (It was on, but I was shocked to realize that Shepard Book from Firefly was Harris.)
Taxi
Three's Company
Cheers
The Cosby Show
Gimme a Break! (Boy could she sing!)

Still later, M*A*S*H, although I refused to watch this as a kid because war was violent and I didn't get the jokes. lol

We did not have TV when I was a kid. My parents were members of a very strict religion that viewed TV as a "cardinal sin". While this type of thinking is crazy and unjustified, it did make for a much more active childhood. However, I do remember sneaking over to a friend's house and watching Speed Racer and Godzilla! I'm not sure which I enjoyed more- watching TV, or knowing that I was getting away with committing a "cardinal sin"!

Sky King.........how could you not have the hots for Penny........even if she was "an older woman"?

I recently got  the first season on Netflix. (other seasons not out yet) Not as good as I remembered..........

That show must have sold a lot of Cessna 310s, which is, IMO, one of the most beautiful planes ever built. (the 310 was the second plane,,,,,,the earlier "Bamboo Bomber" was not very attractive) One scene that I'll always remember is "Songbird" landing on an aircraft carrier.

Amos & Andy was a great show (before it became politically incorrect).  Brought to you by "Blatz, the beer that made Milwaukee famous!" It was on Friday's nights and my dad often would make warm chocolate chips cookies for us while we enjoyed the show.

Knight Rider
A-Team
Airwolf

These three shows make up the current 6pm-9pm (CT) schedule for my local RTN affiliate and at 9pm "Emergency!" comes on, which is a show I watched quite often back in the '70s.

BTB, you've got your beer brands confused. Blatz did indeed sponsor Amos n' Andy, but Schlitz is "the beer that made Milwaukee famous".

Some believe that Valentin Blatz originally owned the slogan and sold to Schlitz, but back in the 1890s and therefore long before radio.

A few months back our local NBC affiliate fired up a new digital station and linked it with the Antenna TV network.  Every Tuesday night it airs a 2-hour block (4 episodes) of WKRP in Cincinnati, and I'm liking it (especially Jan Smithers) as much now as I did (especially Jan Smithers) back then.

A nice bump.....
I keep trying to remember the name od the show based on a train out west, (not the later Wild, Wild West which I also liked), I have been waiting for "Whirlybirds", based around a pair of Bell 47 helicopters to come back. I'd also like to see "The Lieutenant" about a young Marine Corps officer who became the model for Capt Kirk. Thanks to Netflix, I got to find out how "The Prisoner" turned out, although the ending did leave the question of who ran the camp unanswered.

As young parents, we enjoyed "Solid Gold", although it was painful to watch the decline of the host. It looks like (to me, a non pro) a good , cheap to produce, show that could be brought back for Friday or Saturday at 8PM.
