Depends on the burger. My favourite is a flat top burger and it has to have American.

If it's a flame broiled burger then a nice bold cheddar.

I'm okay with some types of cheese but do not like blue. I find it too pungent and not complementary for a burger.

It really does depend on what's on it. A California burger: I change with my mood, at the time. If I'm having grilled mushrooms, a good swiss!

A good, sharp cheddar is my "go-to" cheese.  But I'm also with Lee, if I get sauteed mushrooms then I definitely need swiss on it.

Two slices of Sharp American. On a mushroom burger, like the others, a good Swiss.
I like blue cheese on my salad, not on my burger. I do sell a lot of bacon & blue burgers with grilled onions & horseradish mayo though, so it is popular on burgers.

Beef and blue cheese are a popular combination. I don't however get it. I find they compete rather than compliment.

I tried it on a burger..once. I should note that, normally, I like limburger, with beer, but this experiment didn't work.

For me, it has to be Colby. The mix of sharp and creamy is awesome. Makes great Mac and cheese too.

    1. American cheese & grilled onions on a diner burger.
    2. If we are getting grilled burgers, (at a resturant) its swiss cheese with sauted mushrooms.
    3. If we make them at home, we use american cheese, yellow onion, sliced tomatoes & crunchy part of romaine lettuce
    Our family loves burgers :)

And on rye it makes a great grilled cheese sandwich.

Colby, Swiss, Cheddar, Muenster, creamy blue...for me they're all good on (and in) a cheeseburger.  American is often too bland for me, though.

What I can never figure out is when to capitalize the name of a cheese or leave it lower case!

Cheddar. But like some have said, if mushrooms, then Swiss. And there's something to be said about Gouda with onions only.

At Terry's in Cincy I've had gouda and was quite pleased with it. At home it's either cheddar or American.

I just bought some NM chiles over the weekend and looking frward to green chile cheeseburgers.  Haven't decided on the cheese.  I'm normally a cheddar.

A few slices of American, a cheese I never eat "on its own".

For me, other cheeses I love by themselves:  Swiss, Bleu, Gruyere, etc. can sometimes overwhelm the burger/beef taste.

Most often, I do not put cheese on it.  When in the mood, 1 slice if White American cheese.   For me, too much cheese, or a sharp cheese, does not complement the burger.
