There can be no doubt that Poochies in Skokie serves the best hot dogs in the Chicago area, it's perfection.

You can't beat "Mike's" cart at the corner of 33rd and Aberdeen in Chicago. True Chicago dogs....Vienna dogs and poppy buns. Plus tamales, both the "roll" and "bunch." My buddies and I used to visit Mike almost every night. Mike was pretty old, and when he wasn't feeling well, his daughter would run the cart for him. He only came out in the evenings and had a gas lantern for lighting. Let's see....Mike was probably in his 60s when I was 14 years old, so he'd be....um.....add 4...take away 6.....hmmmmm. Mike would be around 114 now. Maybe he's not there anymore, but I'll never forget him and his great wooden cart. I guess 25 cents for a hot dog and a dime for a tamale was quite awhile ago.

Gotta be Hot Doug's, at 3324 N. California Street. They don't have long hours and they may be crowded, but I bet you'll want to upgrade from the standard Chicago-style dog to one or more of Doug's incredible sausage creations. He's an obsessed genius when it comes to sausages.

A bunch of us Chicago ex-pats drool from afar at Doug's Specials web page, which changes weekly.

I'm a bit of a purist and I enjoy the simple pleasure of a hot dog at Byron's . . . steamed, natural casing wiener on a plain bun with raw onion and mustard. Sometimes a little celery salt sneaks on and thats OK with me.

SuperDawg is great if only for the fries, pickled tomato and lack of catsup.

Gene & Jude's is my favorite by far. I almost don't want to eat any other hot dog but don't make it out to EP as often as I'd like.

Hot Doug's is good, but more for their exotic sausages than standard hot dogs.

Murphy's on Belmont is alright. As is Jimmy's.

Wrigleyville Dogs is walking distance so that's been my place of late.

Not wild about Bowser Dog. Plain hot dog, and too many toppings. Green peppers, lettuce, really?

PS-ABSOLUTLEY NO KETCHUP!

Just got back from lunch at Hot Doug's--had a regular Chicago dog and a Polish sausage. Both were good, but next time I'll spring for one of the specialty sausages. Today there were several specialties, including an Ostrich sausage, a cognac/hazelnut Pheasant sausage, and a Portuguese linguica.

The best part of my meal today, however, was the order of french fries cooked in Duck Fat. Oh My Friggin' Goodness, they were amazing and worth every calorie. What a treat.

Try hitting Midway if you can. They got a Superdawg, which isn't bad.

Also a nod to Portillo's, which is a chain, but a local chain.

When I have a taste for a hot dog in my area ( Chicago's south suburbs ), I stick to places that serve Vienna all-beef dogs. But if I'm anywhere near the city's north / northwest side, it's just gotta be Superdawg. I love every thing about the place; the dog, the fries
( Superfries, which my Superdawg is "contentedly cushioned in...." ), the building, and especially Maurie and Flaurie, smiling down at me from the roof. A true Roadfood classic!

All my life I've been a hot dog purist; nothing but yellow mustard on any dog of mine. However, today I took the big leap - I finally had my first Chicago-style dog with all the various toppings on it. I was even bold enough to get sport peppers on it ( hot! ) I didn't really expect to like it, but I surprised myself by thoroughly enjoying the dog. The flavors of the various ingredients came together quite nicely and complimented each other. The bow-wow came from Mr. Gyros on Torrence Ave. here in Lansing, and I'm going to be going back for more of the same.

Congratulations on finally earning full Chicago citizenship!  I can't believe you hadn't had a classic Chicago Style Dog up until now.  If I had known,  I would have treated you to one at Hot Doug's on the Spring Fling Tour!

All my life I've been a hot dog purist; nothing but yellow mustard on any dog of mine.

I'm a purist as well. 90% of the time just mustard; brown on an all beef dog, yellow on a beef/pork mix. While the Chicago style dog was not my favorite style, I aquired a taste for them when a Chicago native opened a place near me serving Chicago dogs and Italian Beef. Previously I had what was claimed to be a Chicago style dog at a hot dog truck in Jersey and at the Shake Shack in New York. Both not good and not what most from Chi Town would consider authentic.

The guy from Chicago who opened in my area got everything from Vienna Beef except the tomatoes and onions. Because he was within 5 miles of my house I went often and finally began to appreciate a style that is so popular in and around Chicago. I liked the contrast between hot meat and cool vegetables. The Vienna frank was spiced just right in order to blend in and not overpower the other ingredients like a spicier frank would. Too bad this restaurant is no longer around. His place was even recognized by the president of Vienna Beef.

Although I've never been to Chicago, I feel that I am familiar with a lot of these places since I've heard them all described numerous times and read about them. I think I would like the bare bones dog at Gene and Judes. Or the Char dog at Fluky's. Some day.
