It is OK reading but the man is in his mid 70's and has a duty to his readers to finish up the story line if at all possible before he dies. I think that he is training his son to take over because they have supposedly collaborated on 2 books set in his original OSS series. I found the first one not to be very good and the second is due out this summer........

I think that The Corps series is a franchise that could be filled in by another author, if W.E.B. Griffin were to provide just 2 or 3 pages of notes per book. James Bond survived Ian Fleming. I think that McCoy, Pickering et al should survive their creator. I am not a great fan of the new series either, but I am glad to see that he is still writing. I'll continue to read each book that he is able to produce, in whole or in part.

Also Captain Horatio Hornblower, and Jake Grafton (especially in the earlier books), and William A. Farralon, the hero of The Soldier, as serialized in the Saturday Evening Post in the early 1960s. Moby Dick has been mentioned, but Starbuck has not. He is one of my favorites too.

The League of Extraordinary Gentleman by Alan Moore

The comic series that is is based on, not the movie. It needs to be read at least twice to realize how many literary references are in there. It is incredible. I think that nobody is too old to enjoy both of the collected series.

It is sad that the film was not good enough to create a sequel, which as published had them taking on the Martian hordes as they attack London. Mr. Hyde goes like The Hulk on the tripods. Fun stuff.

There are two reference books that cover both series of the group and there is no literary character from that period that goes unnoticed.

My favorite C S Forester book wasn't part of the Hornblower series..although I read most of them, too. It was "The Good Shepherd". A novel of Convoy duty in the North Atlantic during WWII.

Doggydaddy, that series is indeed fantastic. I can't wait for the next book, The Black Dossier, to come out in October. I love the enormous attention to detail paid by Moore and the artist Kevin O'Neil.

If you're a fan of superheroes, check out Top Ten by Alan More. The story of a police force in a city where everyone is a superhero, it's great. So much detail in every panel. References to comics and science fiction abound; I see something new every time I pick up one of the books.

"The Gun" was a good one too, and "Rifleman Dodd" was required reading when I was in the Marines. I think that my great aunt mentioned that she met the author when she worked as a secretary to the boss at The Saturday Evening Post. I should have paid more attention to her memories.

Mitch Rapp has the full resources of the United States government and high technology backing him as he goes about wiping out terrorists. Jack Reacher usually hooks up with a local gal, borrows a gun and then proceeds to blow away all the bad guys. He manages to do that without a trace too.

Since they are both on the good side I guess they will never have the chance to face off.

Okay, I just reread Call of the Wild and White Fang over the weekend, and I need to edit my list to add Buck and White Fang to my favorites.

I had a bartender friend years ago whose dog tore into a would-be robber, chasing the robber away. Dog's name: Kichie. What hat do you suppose my friend pulled that one out of? Myself, I've always had a soft spot for Lady, the Tramp (partly because the initials they decorate with paw prints, JM, in the best scene in the movie except at Tony's, are my initials), Pongo, and Perdita (and company), and let us not forget the very real Balto.

Of course we can't forget Balto and the other heroic dogs who were the inspiration for the Iditarod race. One of the best dogs I ever had was a Husky, and I have a lot of love and respect for the working dog breeds. Their loyalty, and their willingness to help mankind is awesome.

In the mystery genre, I'm also pretty fond of Christy's Hercule Poirot.
