Fellow Roadfooders, we must rally to save..... Wed, 09/22/04 5:05 PM (permalink)
....our friend the Twinkie from extinction! This is a nightmare. Imagine the travesty of heading to your local grocer and not finding Ring Dings, Ho Ho's, Twinkies and the like. Personally, I couldn't stand it, and I plan on doing my part to help this fine company!

Read it and weep, kids....

I am sure that there is a better news story somewhere else, but this was the one on my welcome page today.

I've done my part. None of that low carb garbage for me. (Then again, I don't eat Twinkies either.)

Don't get me wrong. I wish you all the best, but I have to draw the line somewhere. Sweets was that line for me. My wife might be willing to help out, but she'd hate herself afterwards.

This is a part of my childhood that I'm not willing to let go of. EAT TWINKIES!

There are some good recipes for homemade Twinkies but I'd hate to not be able to grab a quick snack/sugar fix when I'm in a hurry and Twinkies (plural) usually suffice nicely.

I used to really like Twinkies as a kid but then again I think Tastykake products are superior.

Um--I'm no financial whiz or anything, but just because a company files for Chapter 11, doesn't necessarily mean they are going out of business. Chapter 11 means reorganization in the attempt to become profitable again. I believe in Chapter 7 they cease to exist.

And they can blame it on low-carb craze all they want. A company that big that files for Chapter 11 just means somebody wasn't paying attention to their biz.

I grew up with Tastykakes and never had any desire for a twinkie. They had nothing on a butterscotch krimpet!

"Homemade Twinkies" is an oxymoron. There is no way anyone could have enough chemical preservatives on hand at home to make their own twinkies!!

Tastykakes have it all over Twinkies, more variety, fresher product, etc., etc. Sorry they couldn't make it, but c'est la vie and pass me a butterscotch krimpet.

Blame me. I haven't bought Stinkies in 40 years.

If I could get Devil Dogs here in Ohio I'd help out. I don't think I've ever seen a twinkie and I have absolutely no idea what a ho-ho might be.

Don't want to be a "food snoot" here, but I like homemade and bakery desserts WAY better than the packaged stuff. I'll go for a candy bar as an afternoon vending machine snack instead of a Ring Ding or a Tastycake. If I'm going to eat something that's "bad" for me (and I often do ) , I'd rather it be fresh (donuts, bakery muffins, diner pie, ice cream) than a processed snack.

as someone who has always thought hostess products inferior to tastycake, this news doesn't exactly upset me. Especially since there is more to Interstate Bakeries than just Hostess products;they are the bakers of Wonder Bread- the epitome of tasteless air-fluffed white bread. I also believe that Interstate was the first company to attempt national distribution of bread and bakery products. As such they were the bane of all the regional bakers who this site was formed to celebrate.

Awwww--too bad for the Twinkie people. I was reminded of the Hillbilly Gourmet Special--The Blinkie. This is a Twinkie with a piece of baloney wrapped around it.

Alert to Twinkie fans.. the company has no plans at this time for stopping production of your favorites...it is just financial reorganization...

                                From Ghostbusters:

                                EGON
I'm worried, Ray. It's getting crowded in there. And all my recent data points to something big on the horizon.

                                WINSTON
                                What do you mean, big?

                                EGON
Well. Let's say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York area. According this morning's sample, it would be a Twinkie thirty-five feet long weighing approximately six hundred pounds.

                                RAY coughs violently

                                WINSTON
                                That's a big Twinkie.

EGON nods and eats his Twinkie.

I contributed to the cause by buying a box today!
Up until 1994, we were one of the few areas which did not
have Twinkies or any of its related products, so the only way
I was able to get any was to bring a few boxes back from vacation.
Now if we can get two more icons of Americana, Mobil and
                                  Seven-Eleven, to set up shop....
The closest we had to real Twinkies was put out by Little
Debbie, which is more concerned with Nutty Bars and oatmeal pies.

Don't you people know that gorging on twinkies will make you all homicidally crazy and you'll most likely kill an important political figure or two and have to get a lawyer smart enough to convince a jury that the "Twinkie Defense" is real--AGAIN?

Very true indeed...but I do have a great recipe for white cake with creme filling (Its actually better than a real Twinkie).

I think Twinkie's used to be much better back in the day...does anybody else think so? In the past few years, either its just me or the Twinkie has shrunk. I think the ones I had as a kid either appeared larger because I was small at the time...not sure. One more thing, maybe its because my taste buds have matured, but I remember retro Twinkies tasting better than the present variety. Again, maybe its just me...

And if bankruptcy for the food industry is anything like it is in the airline industry, the Twinkie company can file time and time again and we'll still be able to get our Twinkies.

                                        Regards,

As long as they don't try to bring back that awful low-fat version

back in 1976 when I visited my cousins in SF, everytime we went
grocery shopping at a Lucky store close to their home on Pine St.,
I would buy at least two boxes of Hostess products just for the
cards (and of course the Twinkies, etc...., which were a welcome
sight after being "isolated" for one month in the Central
                                          Philippines) [|)]

I'm worried, Ray. It's getting crowded in there. And all my recent data points to something big on the horizon.

Well. Let's say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York area. According this morning's sample, it would be a Twinkie thirty-five feet long weighing approximately six hundred pounds.

                                            RAY coughs violently

                                            That's a big Twinkie.

EGON nods and eats his Twinkie.

Err, I am not sure I'd ever count twinkies as roadfood, ergo it isn't something I'd rally around and fight to keep.

The best part of the twinkie is bottom - scooping it off the cardboard!

They'll be around forever......wouldn't worry about it.

Aleswench, no cardboard with our Twinkies - everything sticks

I must be in the minority, but I would much rather have Twinkies than Butterscotch Krimpets from Tastycake. I dont know, but Tastycake has just recently started to distribute their products in my area (northern WV) and i'm not really that impressed. So far i've tried the krimpets, chocolate cupcakes with butterscotch icing that stuck to the wrapper, and some type of peanut butter cakes with chocolate icing (best of the three). Maybe i'm missing something, but so far i'll stick with hostess.

I forgot that I started this thread....and I had no idea it turned into a Drake's versus Tastycakes discussion. Personally, I think that there is room for both on the supermarket shelf.

My soft spot for Twinkies goes back to about 1986. Drake's put baseball cards in three card panels on the bottom of Drake's boxes. I am sure that I ate my self sick on Twinkie's that year, because I think the Dwight Gooden card was on the bottom of the Twinkie's boxes. That would have also been the time of my tour of duty working in the supermarket where I had first dibs on all the cake boxes.

I think to complete my set, I had to buy the assorted fruit pies -- which I was not a fan of. If only they had eBay back then...I could have traded one of my extra Dwight Gooden's for the fruit pie panel. The fruit pie probably had sucky guys on it, too, like Dale Murphy!

As far as the company's financial situation, I don't think I ever heard that they re-emerged from bankruptcy or any other improvement in status. In the meantime, I will be glad that they are still producing -- even though I admit, I have not eaten a Twinkie in nearly 20 years!
