Fianlizing My Location Fri, 02/3/12 7:34 AM (permalink)
Hello All

I am still working on my site,  I do not have a nearby location that has alot of foot traffic, so I need to set up in a place I can get car traffic.  I have found a place with great visibility from all directions, easy in and out, and plenty of parking.  The location is very close to a Flashing Red light so all traffic is stopped for at least a few seconds with 3 of the directions looking at where I will be.  and the fourth directions is slowing down as it approaches my location.

I have used the New York State Department of Transportaion Traffic Data Viewer and have found that Average Daily Traffic is 2442 from one direction 3152 from another 6562 from the third and the fouurth direction goes into a real rural area and the volume is only about 1000 this totals about 12,000 average daily volume..  Also, in 1-2 miles from the location in either direction the volume is 12454 and 15527 respectively.

A short dsitance from the location is a park and ride.  My basic marketing plan would be to hit all the cars in the park and ride that I am there and they can pick up dinner for the family.  I will stay open until 6 or 7 pm.  Also I plan on Sandwich Boards about 500' back from intersection in all direction with feather banners. I will also hit all the local businesses with menus and hours of operation.

I have contacted the owner of the property and they are very receptive to the idea.

If you had this information what would you think of the location, also, what else might you look into and consider?

Thank You
Al

And then the city sez NO STREET PEDDLING in this town.......

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. In my area the HARD part is finding a suitable location that has everything, AND does not take an act of Congress with the city. Makes the licensing part seem easy and straight forward. Maybe I should ask you guys one of those ambiguous questions like "where should I set up?" NO NO please.

      Thank You for your response.
I know what I can and can not do in my area.  I know That I can put my cart in this location.  My question is in regards to the stats I provided.  Does my fellow roadfooders think based on the stats and description I provided this would be a good spot.  I will take care of licensing and HD regs on my own, in fact, I am pretty much done with them.

      Thank You

you can have a million cars a day drive by....problem is, if they are driving by, well, they aint stopping....
is there easy in out, if your on the corner that means only one direction of traffic can whip in and out.....one direction can fairly easily pull in and get back out..... two of the directions might as be on the other side of a river, until they possibly come back by on a return trip....
what time of day are the bulk of these numbers being produced ?..... if you are there from 6-1, or 10-2, and all this traffic is 6-8 heading to work or 4-6 on the way home, your not going to do very well.....

I also have a location with a ton of traffic, theoretically, it should be great.  We shall see.  I have been told that it is all a matter of being consistent with the hours I am there, as well as serving a good dog.  That way I can get a true idea of what is possible, but have backup locations ready.

The location is easy in and easy out in all directions, it is also elevated so it is highly visible from all directions.  I am not sure what time the traffic is there.  I will be going and watching for a few hours on different days.

I think you should be looking for a location with good foot traffic.  Your type of offering is one that will draw by spontaneity of the person walking by, and will find it easy to grab a quick dog from their current location.  Very difficult to get vehicles to make a special stop just for you, unless there is other draws that will entice them.  Carts, IMHO equal street food, and street food requires pedestrians....but anyway I think you've done your homework with regards to checking for traffic, but the type of traffic may be more important to you in the long run....best of luck!

I understand that the prime spots for a food truck/cart is where you have pedestrian traffic.  But, like I said, I do not have that luxury so I have to seek an alternative.  I could try and find a spot farther into the heavier traffic area, but then the easy in and easy out with room for parking becomes the real issue.  Well, if the spot does not work out, it will cost me very little for trying and I can always move on down the line.

I have seen locations that you would think would be great, be lousy. I have also seen locations that you would think be lousy, be great. I only know one thing, sever good food, run a good clean operation, and be personable. That will make your location have a chance to be the best it can be...................Good luck...............pnwc
