From Shapiro's Website at http://www.shapiros.com/ Shapiro's Downtown location will be closed for repairs caused by a recent fire until the first week of April. To learn more about the fire, read the latest updates in the Indianapolis Star and see the pictures of the damage. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause, and hope that you will visit us again soon. There are pictures on the Website of the damage and of the reconstruction efforts.

Shapiro's original downtown location did reopen in early May in time for fans returning to the city for May's race activities. Food is excellent as usual and the reconstruction kept the "feel" of the place. Steve Somermeyer

Had dinner at Shapiros Downtown on May 14. Their Potato Salad may be the best I've ever had. Anyone have the recipe. A friend I was visiting in Indy mentioned fire (my last visit was June '01) but only change I could see was that the restrooms were very nice. Even the soap dispenser was automated.

You should not miss Shapiros. It's a little different from most delis in that it is cafeteria style, but the corned beef on homemade thick sliced to order rye is as good as any. The potato salad may be the best I've ever tasted. This place is good anywhere. Fried chicken dinners are big in Indy. One of the best places is Dodd's Town House. It's all family style with great cinnamon rolls. On Meridian (Indy's main street)north of downtown. For the best homemade root beer, go to Mug N Bun on 10th St near the Speedway. Sweet and creamy just like in the old days. Try a pork tenderloin too. (for a photo look at Root Beer forum under misc.)

Shapiro's one of my favorite eating establishments of all time. I remember taking a customer here, don't think the one in Carmel was open yet, abd I didn't realize they did not accept credit cards. I had to borrow $$ from my customer to pay the bill. I guess, well, he paid the bill.

I ate at the Shapiro's in Carmel several months ago. It is a very nice place and the selection is enormous. I had a very difficult time deciding on what I wanted. You have to be careful or you will load your tray up. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Ate lunch at Shapiro's in July with my wife--twice--during a visit to Indianapolis. First time since the fire, incidentally. Introduced my 23 year old daughter to their food on the second trip; she was amazed. I think the pastrami there is even better than their excellent corned beef.
