Beautiful piece Al.  It always amazes me how you can create something beautiful like that.

guys, I really enjoy the pics here; thanks!

my latest toy is a Savage bolt action .17 HMR with a 3 x 9 scope; I wanted a rimfire to add to my collection, and I'd heard great things about the .17's.   It should be fun to shoot!

OK, After several tries to get Janet 'comfortable' with her Hog-Hunting Gun and a good scope for it, we finally got the right combination to make things work the way we want them too.

Here are a couple of photos to update the status of the Ruger Mini-30, it's Barska 3x9x42 illuminated crosshairs scope, now ready for service.

Michael...Get a shot of Lisa with her rifle and we'll post them together to set the tone for the upcoming Hunt !!

If you can email them to me I can insert them into a post you make describing them...or you can edit the post you just did, after I add the photos you send to me.

Al, on the off chance lleechef would be willing pose for a photo, the only way I could e-mail it to you would be if I shot it with my cell phone camera. For some reason, though, I think she's a little gunshy when it comes to photos that might ever show up on Roadfood. I, of course, have no idea what that might be about, although I seem to recall a dog being involved.

I understand !  Janet cranked off about 30 rounds of 7.62 this morning shooting water-filled milk jugs at about 40 yards. She is beginning to get used to handling the Ruger.... but has a long way to go to be ready for "Hog  Thursday" in September !

Finally had a chance to shoot this at the range over the weekend.  A bit of fine tuning the scope, and I was shooting 1-1/2" groups at 100 yards, 1" groups at 50 yards.   Look out chucks!  (I'm not that good of a shot, either)

Trying to decide if it has enough power for coyotes.  I think it may be on the light side; although some reviews say they are fine with the .17 HMR for those.  The high velocity helps the lighter bullet pack the wallop.

Mr. Mayor, I saw that Winchester is coming out with a hog-specific load for .223 and .308; not sure about other calibers...

it will soon have a Weaver rail and a nice scope to match..photos coming .
Here it is as it came from the Box.

Today I installed a Weaver Silver rail on the rifle, then put my 1.5x6x38mm pig scope on it to see how it shoots.

They included a silver 'Dovetail' scope mount with the rifle (in the box), but it was not installed. I got a Weaver Rail on Ebay, so the "standard" scope rings would fit without having to alter the mounts.  The Mini-30 I got had a Ruger dovetail mount installed, which I replaced with the Weaver mount also.

I see. Mine, and I thought all of them, came with grooves in the top of the receiver for the attachment of scope rings.

Fine Tuning the Ruger 10-22 a bit. I took off the scope as the open sights seem to be just fine for the Spinner targets and water bottles we are practicing on...
We installed an extended Magazine Release latch, a $10 aftermarket SS lever that allows my insensitive finger-tips to easily feel and release the mags from their 'internal-bombay' in the carbine.
Also picked up a couple of 30 round mags. The factory 10 rounders are fine, but this allows me to waste a lot more ammo before stopping the carnage.

I hope Janet doesn't blame me for mentioning the 30-round mags.

No problem, Michael, She's the one who complained about having to reload after 10 rounds ran thru the 10-22 when she tried it out.  This weekend we will let her play with the 30 rounders. I can assure you there will be no gripes after that. The little mag-loader thing sure makes pushing those little 22 rounds into the magazine an easy task.

OK, We backed-up a step with the Ruger 10-22. The adjustable open sights work better for what we are doing..Spinner Targets and water jugs, than the heavy scope did.

Here is the normal operating 10-22, with a 30 round mag inserted, and if you look closely, the SS extended mag release that we put in to make it much easier to change magazines, is visible.

The extended mag release is a good idea. I have trouble sometimes, myself, with the standard release.
