Five Guys Sat, 01/7/06 10:19 PM (permalink)
I have been reading alot about Five Guys Hamburgers and hot dogs in different magazine articles lately, and after going to there link via Holly, I see they have 1 location in Avon CT about 20 minutes from me. Has anyone been there, is the store open? I haven't seen any press about it or heard anyone talk about the store. Any info is appreciated.

You should probably call them at 860-409-9100. The people operating the store are more likely than anyone on this website able to tell you if they are open. Since it is a chain, the experience at this location is likely to be exactly the same at other locations.

Here's one thread talking about Five Guys.

Do a search and you will find 3 or 4 other detailed threads. Good Luck.

Yepo it's open. I was the 66th customer they had . I work at the Tweeter one plaza over so, needless to say, we have all probably gained 5 pounds at work. The dogs aren't bad actually but it's really all about the burger and fries. My usual bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions, cajun fries and a red birch beer is about the best lunch that can be had these days in the Farmington Vally. The owners are very good peoples too boot. Chain or not they are some damn good burgers and only compete with the Joe Pizza's (in Canton on 44) Joe Bacon Cheeseburger. The Joe burger really isn't a lunch item though... way too big and (delicously) greesy.. Try them both!

I recently went to 5 guys at Myrtle Beach, SC. After all that I had heard about them , I must say it was very good. I will go back again.

Ok so I broke down and drove over to Avon for lunch today, so much for my diet. If you haven't been to Five Guys, you're missing out. Yes I agree with those that complain because they only do burgers well done and since its made to order its not exactly FAST food, but for what I paid I got a darn good meal. Great concept and for a Sunday afternoon the place was pretty crowded. I think they should do very well, just hope they don't take over the area before I get my hot dog joint up and running. Stagger I have been to Joe's and have had their pizza, never had the burgers just seeing the size of them I don't know if I could finish one...but I should give it a try. For those of you who don't come up in this area often there are some great joints just drop me a line and i can point some out to ya.

Just out of curiosity, what's a fast-foot franchise/chain place doing on the home page as the restaurant of the day?

Went back to Five Guys last nite and tried the hot dog. If they don't win Hartford Advocates best hot dog in Hartford area next year something is wrong. They should win for best burgers too if the Advocate considers chain restaurants.

Also, have you been to Rosco's Big Dog? Located in Hartford, I would say that they serve the best hot dog I've had in Connecticut out of about a dozen places that I've been to.

And just how does that make them different from other fast food, franchise/chains that serve good food and are relegated to obscurity here?

I'm not sure what brand they use but it is grilled split down the middle. The burgers are fresh, never frozen which says alot. I spoke with the franchisee, he actually came around to talk to people but for some reason I totally forgot to ask about the brand. I have eaten at Rosco's and I do enjoy Thumanns but I was neither impressed with the dog or the prices. A Big Dog w/ everything on it was almost $6.00 for the dog alone!! The fries were gritty like they were never washed and the soda was way over priced and I was charged for a refill...It should cost the owner around .12 for cup, syrup, seltzer, lid and straw and he charged close to $1.50 for a medium..which is ok but then to charge for a refill is rediculous...I won't return because 1 reason GREED!! I understand that a business person needs to make a profit but to me this was pure greed. I have never been to a hot dog joint that was this expensive! And I was there in the summer and it was 92 degrees inside (according to the thermometer on the wall behind the counter), the employees said the owner won't fix the a/c or upgrade it...do they charge extra for the sweat that was dripping off the employees into the food?? As for a chain on roadfood..what do we consider a chain?? Many hot dog places venture out and open other stores, do we take them off as soon as they open a second store? When Doogies opened a second did it come off? How about Pinks expanding to Vegas does it come off Roadfood cuz its now a chain?? Just wondering? I hope we can keep on discussing great roadfood places regardless if they are 1 or 50.

$6.00, really?! I was only there once and got the regular dog (6 to a lb) rather than the quarter pounder. I forget what I paid for it. I went with some people from this forum on the Conn. Hot Dog Run, so the owner gave me some of their toppings on the side to sample, which were good, in my opinion. I don't know of any places near me that use the Thumann's griller, so I buy them at the store and have them at home.

I think that &3.29 for a 5 to a lb dog at Syd's is expensive, so I don't eat there often, even if it is my favorite all beef dog. I prefer to buy the same dogs at the factory and have them home.

First of all, I have nothing against chains as chains. If they have good food, fine. If they don't have good food I just don't eat there. One of my complaints is the segregation of fast food franchise/chains here on Roadfood, and their removal from plain view. The other complaint has to do with the fact that some fast food franchise/chains are, as Orwell said in relation to certain barnyard animals, more equal than others, and are allowed not only to remain on the home page, but even to be featured.

anybody have an address in Avon for Five Guys?
I'd like to check them out for myself.

For the record, the 6/lb. naked dog at Rosco's is $2.50, and the 4/lb. naked dog is $3.50.

                                      Refills are half-price.

and there's no way that a Hebrew National dog can compare with a Thumann's

Hey if you drive through around 1:30 or so Stop by the Tweeter, Etc. store at 195 West Main St. (next to Ski Market) and ask for Josh. I'll grab a burger with you. I'm one plaza east of the Five Guy's on rt. 44. It's just that a regular fries is big for one person and a large feeds 2 people perfectly.

At Rosco's that is the price for naked dogs, but if you go to his web site u'll see he charges for the toppings. A big dog with bacon, chili, cheese, hot pepper relish and kraut almost $6.00.

WRONG on the price at Rosco's. Big Dog, 1/4 lb. w/ 10 toppings is more like $4.50 It's around $7.00 as a combo w/ fries and a drink. Fries are fresh cut Belgian fries and I love them. You also get a ton of them (about the equivalent of 2 super-sized McDonalds fires) for $1.50. Medium drinks are $1.25 for 16oz. I also talked to the owner and found out the Owner of the building / landlord, NOT the business owner is refusing to fix air conditioning. I think you need to look at portions, food quality, etc. It's actually cheaper, for the value, than other hot dog places I've been ripped off from. I happen to think they're the best dogs in Hartford and agree with John Fox, long dog and other hot dog afficiando's. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but I would temper that.

Five Guys is a franchise, I believe. Rosco's is privately owned.

Its not a franchise..your thinking of rosco's chicken and waffles. Rosco's is owned by Hihat llc according to the sign on the counter when i was there..can't find nothing about Hihat llc to see if it was planning on opening more places..but doubt it would make it as a chain. Funny on the menu I got, which has prices different then their website..must be an old one..prices are cheaper..it says Hihat on it too....Can our HiHat that writes great things about Rosco's be the same one that owns the company??
