5 guys is an excellent local chain. However, it's a bit disconcerting to see them expand nationally. How long will they be able to maintain the integrity of the burger? Five guys in the VA area is good. I have not been to the one in Atlanta. However, I did try Fatburger and loved the fries. The Fatburger burger was decent too.

Just returned from my first experience at one of MANY "Five Guys", that have opened in Atlanta, and it's 'burbs.

So far, a thumbs-up! I was surprised for a chain, even a small one (but growing!!!), how sparse the menu is. However, that could be a strong point, in some ways. Far better to do what you do right, than to do a lot of things poorly.

Anyway, it was late, and there were only one other couple dining. My order was to go, and it was taken quickly, and on the grill immediately. I can see, the somewhat late hours (10pm) and this location, right next to a subway station is going to be interesting.

While I was waiting for my order, and sitting facing the door and register (old law enforcement habit), I observed something interesting. An obvious street person came in, and shuffled up to the register. The young girl bent over, and the man whispered something to her, and she quickly shook her head no. He leaned over again, and she again did the same. A third time, and she asked the cook to come over. He talked to the man for a minute or so, and returned to the grill, where he put several patties on. The man took two one dollars bills, and put them in the tip jar, and sat down.

I figure the man asked for some food, and was told no. But the cook decided to help the guy out, and he in return gave them the couple bucks he had. WHATEVER. Just an observation of urban realities and business.

As for the food: The basic, no frills brown paper bag, was already showing grease stains , by the time I walked out with my order. The fries were the cajun style, and there were as many out of the styrofoam serving cup, as inside. A hallmark, IIRC, of the chain.

The fries were seasoned as cajun would lead you to believe, and they were tasty. My burger was ordered with mustard, onions, tomatoes, and mushrooms. It was a hefty sucker, and had a home-cooked feel to it. Very good! So much so, I cheated my schedule, and had another the next night!

The peanuts while you wait is a nice touch. Overall, the place is red, white, and damn spartan. I wonder if plain bags and tinfoil for wrappers, and styrofoam cups for the fries, all sans any logo, helps the bottom line Maybe it will counter-act, the free food walking out the door at this location!!!

Overall, I liked the burgers a lot. Not cheap, but far better than the average Micky D's or Burger King. Interesting to see how they do. This location is across the street from our one and only "Fat Burger", and I would rate both the burger & fries from Five Guys, superior to Fat Burger. For the record, Fat Burger had the most bland tasting fries I can recall in a long time. Five Guys was better in all departments.

        Any thoughts???

Made a visit to another newly opened Five Guys. It was very good~!

The burger was a tasty messof beef patties, and my toppings (again) of tomato, onion, grilled mushrooms, and mustard. Gonna try one with the A-1 sauce they offer, next time.

The cajun fries were even better at this location, being heavily spiced, and again, over-flowing the cup, and filling the bottom of the bag. The "small" order, is enough for two folks!

The owner and staff were very friendly; welcomed us in, and thanked us on the way out. The store like all of them is bright, and upbeat, if not bare bones.

It was quite busy at supper time, and looks like it will do well. Easily worth the extra you pay, as opposed to McDonald's fare.

I finally got to Five Guys with my husband the other day. We went to the one on Rte 1 in Laurel, MD. I don't know how long it's been there.

The facility was clean, and the help seemed efficient. We had to wait for about 10 minutes for our food. Hubby ordered the large bacon cheeseburger, and I ordered the small (one patty) one. We each ordered fries, which meant they gave us a ridiculous amount -- the whole bag was filled with fries! Note to self: split one order in the future.

Burgers were very good. I'm not a huge hamburger eater, but this one was yummy and very juicy. As others have noted, the bag was quite greasy. The total for 2 drinks, 2 fries, and the two burgers came to over $16, which I thought was a bit steep, especially since the food didn't come on a plate. But it was good, and if there was a restaurant close to home, I'd probably go there when I wanted a burger.

For what it is, the chain works well. It does seem like it is a cut above the usual fast food choices. But it's pricey.

I read recently that the average American eats three burgers a week. I probably eat one or two a month. Does this statistic seem excessive to you?

I had 5 guys burgers and fries for the first time on Friday. It will not be the last. Easily the best burger I've had in a long time. Fresh beef, amazing fries, fresh toppings; the fresh jalapenos were THE BEST! Didn't realize that ordering a bacon cheeseburger actually means you're ordering a double bacon cheeseburger. It was a pleasant surprise. I'm going back tomorrow for lunch, but I'll call ahead first, the line was out the door at one point.

We definitely need one in Hackettstown.
