I don't think I could eat a wet bun.  Do they take returns?

A 5 Guys just opened not far from here so it is somewhere in my future.  At least once.

Mar, wet buns are never good, I had some the other day, I went home and changed........

Thank you, Bill.

I was sure that I was going to get a rash of replies after I posted.

With many years of restaurant experience (now  retired and just slinging hot dogs part time) I watch with interest the various upstarts in the industry. In our area (Florida) Five Guys is a relative newcomer. In the little town in which I live they just opened a new store in a strip center housing a Publix and a Staples. When they first opened they were busy as all get out. My comments at the time was that they were too expensive for our market and they would not last a year. Our local McDonalds drive in has a line at their drive in starting at about 4:30 every day just waiting for the 99 cents burger and fries. Time will tell but my opinion still has not changed. I think the location for these stores as is true for all businesses is critical to their survival. My wife and I visited this local store the other day for a couple of burgers and one order of fries and we spent about $17.00. Quality was excellent but in this economy a bit pricey. We could have doubled our order at McDonalds for under $10.00. I'm not comparing the two just saying that for most people the choice is monetary.

PS Great fries and the malt vinegar is killer. Reminds me of an old New England road side stand.

dickcharron,I'm glad your professional opinion is that 5 Guys is "quality"...and I agree, people who want a .99  burger meal won't go there...but if you want a tasty burger and great fries,it is a great treat!!!! I just paid as much for a burger a TGI Fridays..from their "new" menu, and what once was a vey good burger, is now a "grey" Micky D's quality burger. We all know you can pay more, or even the same for a great burger, but 5 Guys gives you a good burger, with countless free toppings(you can pay $4.00 or more for a whopper and such with a lot less on it and with poor quality burger), so I think you get good consistant food at a fair price.

5 guys is the best of the chains in Ohio. Sometimes they just don't handle the product well and you are apt to get a smashed ugly burger. I find if you tell them not to smash it when bagging results are pretty good. Plus you only need one order of fries for four people. Place is way loud and can get a little unruly when busy. They very greatly from location to location....Russ

I am not a Five Guys hater.  I think they offer a good product for the price.  I do not visit the facility often but when I have, I felt I got good value for my yenom (Thats money spelled backwards
I try not to OD on their peanuts.  The fries are always good but not as good as my twice fried frites (fryes).

They just opened one here in Port St Lucie, FL which many franchises skip altogether. It will be interesting to see if they make it as restaurants drop like flies around here.
I've had their burger many times (mostly in the context of mystery shopping them) and can take it or leave it.

The 5 guys on Charlestown Rd in New Albany just closed down, the food was decent and this location wasnt too loud, but they always had more employees than customers.I believe parking was their biggest problem.(Oh, and soggy buns.)

Actually, New Albany is a decent size city, and is also a suburb of louisville Ky.
We still have  have their other, larger location less than 3 miles away on State St.

Like a few others on here, I have been snarfing down Five Guys burgers since the days "big hair" was still in style.  I have certainly had well over 100, almost exclusively in the northern VA area, which is their home territory.   I can't ever recall having a wet bun.   Maybe it's that I never get it to go, which can allow it to steam in the foil wrap.   I always eat it there, and as soon as my order is up, I unwrap it as soon as I sit down.   I have never seen one quite as crushed as the one pictured earlier.   They are not a pretty presentation, but I always enjoy the burgers at Five Guys.  Maybe our local Five Guys are better trained than the franchises around the country?  I don't know.

Speaking of wet buns, that seems to be a problem with Shake Shack.  I have been to Shake Shack 4 times.  All 4 times were in the South Beach (Miami Beach) location.  I do like their burgers ... hence my going back a few times, ... but all 4 times, the buns were wet.  A couple times I just went to the counter, and asked for a new bun, and all was good.    It's almost as if they had been steamed.  It's too bad, because the rest of the burger was pretty good.

Anyone else notice wet buns at Shake Shack?

Glenn

I tried them this week for the first time.
My opinion: $12 for a greasy cheese burger, fries and a 16oz drink.
They cooked the hell out of it, then I watch the genious on the grill cut my patties in half with the spatula, get his face right down in it to make sure it was cooked, then he pressed on it some more, put the meat on my bun, wrapped it then squeezed it into a ball.
They water blanch their fries, and according to the genious on the grill, they don't season their meat "because it's real good"

Any place, roadfood or franchise is as good  as the worker handling the food...my favorite pizzeria went down when they changed makers...this guy sounds like he didn't have iy!!! As you can read above, your experience at your 5 guys, isn't duplicated everywhere else. This could be a poor franchisee.Good cooks and good leadership!!!!!!

I've never had a "wet" bun at Five Guys.....and ya know what it wouldn't bother me if I did......I order my Beefs double dipped, my Philippe's double dipped.....so a little soggy.......not a big deal.

The only negative thing I've ever had to say about Five Guys is that their fries don't travel well....

Oh, and I always use the little card board things to put my fries in, better for ketchup and vinegar coverage.....and I never ever throw my peanut shells on the floor........

Re:Five Guys "haters" - check this out 2012/02/12 07:57:46 (permalink)
While I've enjoyed Five Guys in the past, I tend to avoid them unless I'm with someone to share the fries as their portions are simply way too large for an average person (great for the obese).

However, I stopped in this week and while I did enjoy their burger (not laden / overpowered with salt as with most fast-food burgers), I again didn't appreciate the limited option of having to purchase a huge, over-sized soft drink plus the fries were among the worst (fresh cut) I've ever had.  Far superior to typical frozen, especially coated fries, but nevertheless, not all that enjoyable.

Not sure what went wrong, but it could be they were not blanched prior to the final cooking.  IMO, fresh cut fries should never be cooked in one step.  Not sure if Five Guys has changed their cooking technique, but they were certainly NOT up to standard.

At nearly $9 for for a burger, fries & soft drink, I do expect a lot more quality.  It'll be a good while before I return.  Fortunately, there are better (non chain) places available in this area with superior quality at that price.

I had a coupon for free deep-fried pickle chips at Smashburger, and stopped in to try them (I've not had fried pickles before).

Spicy Baja Skinny Chicken Sandwich with Fried Pickles

I enjoyed the sandwich, but the pickles were incredibly salty!  Pickled cucumbers are normally salty, but I think some worker figured that they needed salting like french fries.  I couldn't stop nibbling on them, though.

Two of the many things I still don't "get" about Texas are fried pickles and Chicken Fried Steak.  Both are usually "salt-fests".
